  • Archaeological and geoarchaeological properties of functional areas at the Upper Paleolithic site of Zaraysk, East European plain

Open Access•Anastasiia Kurgaeva, Sergey Lev et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•Referências: 79

This study investigates the archaeological and geoarchaeological properties of a cultural layer at the Upper Paleolithic site of Zaraysk. We examine the human impact on soil properties within several functional areas using a multiproxy approach including physical, geochemical, and biogeochemical methods. The percentage of organic carbon most likely added by various human activities was estimated by applying a new approach using n -alkane contents…

  • Holocene landscape evolution, palaeoclimate and human impact in the Fotsch Valley, Stubai Alps, Austria

    Open Access•Marcel Lerch, Marika Stutzriemer et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Referências: 12

Peatlands are receiving increasing attention in palaeoenvironmental research and represent very useful terrestrial archives for reconstructing vegetation, climate and human history. Previous palaeoenvironmental studies in the Fotsch Valley, Stubai Alps, Austria, focused on geoarchaeological investigations on the Ullafelsen representing a very important prehistorical encampment site used by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (10.9–9.5 cal. kyr BP). In or…

  • The Holocene lake-evaporation history of the afro-alpine Lake Garba Guracha in the Bale Mountains, Ethiopia, based on δ 18 O records of sugar biomarker and diatoms

    Open Access•Lucas Bittner, Graciela Gil-Romera et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

In eastern Africa, there are few long, high-quality records of environmental change at high altitudes, inhibiting a broader understanding of regional climate change. We investigated a Holocene lacustrine sediment archive from Lake Garba Guracha, Bale Mountains, Ethiopia, (3,950 m asl), and reconstructed high-altitude lake evaporation history using δ 18 O records derived from the analysis of compound-specific sugar biomarkers and diatoms. The δ 18…

  • Pre-Columbian agricultural landscapes, ecosystem engineers, and self-organized patchiness in Amazonia

Open Access•Doyle Mckey, Stéphen Rostain et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2010

The scale and nature of pre-Columbian human impacts in Amazonia are currently hotly debated. Whereas pre-Columbian people dramatically changed the distribution and abundance of species and habitats in some parts of Amazonia, their impact in other parts is less clear. Pioneer research asked whether their effects reached even further, changing how ecosystems function, but few in-depth studies have examined mechanisms underpinning the resilience of …

  • Digital soil mapping in southern Ecuador

Open Access•Mareike Ließ, Bruno Glaser et al.•ARTICLE•Erdkunde•2009

Soil landscape modelling is based on understanding the spatial distribution patterns of soil characteristics. A model relating the soil's properties to its position within the landscape is used to predict soil properties in other similar landscape positions. To develop soil landscape models, the interaction of geographic information technology, advanced statistics and soil science is needed. The focus of this work is to predict the distribution o…

  • Late Quaternary glacial and climate history of the Pamir Mountains derived from cosmogenic 10 Be exposure ages

Open Access•Roland Zech, Uwe Abramowski et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Moraines southwest of Lake Yashilkul, Pamir, Tajikistan, were dated using 10 Be exposure ages of boulder surfaces. We found evidence for (1) an extensive glaciation ∼60,000 yr ago; (2) a less extensive glacial advance, which deposited a characteristic hummocky moraine lobe with exposure ages ranging from ∼11,000 to 47,000 yr, probably deposited at or before 47,000 yr ago; and (3) lateral moraines with exposure ages of ∼40,000 yr, 27,000 yr and 19…
