How long is too long? Production-internal and communicative constraints in the coding of conditionality in Spanish
This study analyzes to what extent communicative accounts, in contrast to production ease ones, can predict the variable coding length of conditional constructions in Spanish. If coding length is determined by communicative efficiency, we anticipate more accessible antecedents to be more parsimoniously encoded and less accessible ones to be more explicitly encoded. Insofar as coding length is determined by production-internal processes, longer co…
Large corpora and large language models
Much linguistic research relies on annotated datasets of features extracted from text corpora, but the rapid quantitative growth of these corpora has created practical difficulties for linguists to manually clean and annotate large data samples. In this paper, we present a method that leverages large language models for assisting the linguist in grammatical annotation through prompt engineering, training, and evaluation. We apply this methodologi…
Pathways of actualization across regional varieties and the real-time dynamics of syntactic change
This cross-dialectal diachronic study focuses on actualization—the gradual mapping out of structural innovations across linguistic environments—and asks: to what extent can the route by which actualization unfolds be explained by appealing to common cognitive constraints, and to what extent are pathways of actualization shaped by community-specific patterns in language use? I analyze real-time syntactic change in Spanish oblique relative clauses …
Probabilistic reduction and constructionalization
This paper scrutinizes the conventionalization of the Spanish expression la de que (‘the amount of that’), a reduced variant of la cantidad de que . The study seeks to determine the diachrony of and mechanisms underlying the emergence and diffusion of the la de que expression and whether it has conventionalized to develop into an independent form-function pairing. A Bayesian mixed-effects logistic regression analysis of approximately 2000 observa…
Feminine morphology in possessive complements of adverbial constructions in Andalusian varieties
The present study scrutinizes the Spanish morphological variation between masculine and feminine possessive complements used with locative adverbials (e.g. cerca mío / mía ‘close to me’). The feminine -a suffix (e.g. mia) is the innovative variant and has been described by normative grammars as a low-frequency and stigmatized trait. This paper focuses on Andalusian Spanish, where the innovative -a-suffix has the highest frequency of use. Twitter …
El uso de adverbios locativos con pronombres posesivos en el español uruguayo
El presente artículo se centra en el uso variable de las construcciones adverbiales locativas del tipo (a)delante de mí – (a)delante mío en el español del Uruguay. Estudiamos los usos de tales variantes , destacando el proceso diacrónico de cambio lingüístico y los mecanismos subyacentes a este. A través del análisis cuantitativo de un conjunto de más de dos mil datos extraídos de cinco corpus comparables, describimos los contextos lingüísticos d…
