The 12-year longitudinal impact of risk and resilience trajectories on adult health following childhood trauma
While adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to increase mental illness risk, their long-term impact on comprehensive mental well-being-and resilience from a strengths-based lens-has been less explored. This study examined well-being trajectories in individuals with and without ACEs and their ability to predict functional outcomes over 12 years. The TWIN-10 longitudinal study followed 1,668 healthy Australian adults at four time points (2…
Genetic and environmental influences on emotion regulation
Previous studies have established that personality traits related to emotionality are moderately heritable. However, the relative heritability of the strategies people use to regulate emotions is unknown. The present study compared the magnitude of additive genetic, shared environmental, and nonshared environmental influences on 2 commonly used emotion regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. In 743 twin pairs (1,4…
Reduction of Autonomic Regulation in Children and Adolescents With Conversion Disorders
OBJECTIVE: Conversion symptoms--functional neurological disturbances of body function--occur in association with extreme arousal, often in the context of emotional distress. The mechanisms that determine how and why such symptoms occur remain unknown. In this study, we used cardiac measures to assess arousal and cardiac autonomic regulation in children and adolescents who presented with acute conversion symptoms. METHODS: Heart rate was recorded …
Patterns of Emotional-Cognitive Functioning in Pediatric Conversion Patients
OBJECTIVES: To examine patterns of emotion processing in children and adolescents with conversion disorders and to determine whether those patterns are associated with particular clusters of conversion symptoms. Autobiographical narratives were used to investigate the organization of information about distressing feelings and memories. METHODS: Structured interviews about attachment relationships and autobiographical events were administered to 7…
Investigating models of affect
The approach-withdrawal and valence-arousal models both predict that depressive and anxious profiles will be associated with relatively reduced left frontal and increased right frontal activity respectively, while the valence-arousal model also proposes a dissociation by lower and higher right parietotemporal activity, respectively. Recent work further suggests that subtypes of anxiety disorders may be characterized by distinctive patterns of act…
Body mass index and neuropsychological function in healthy children and adolescents
Post-traumatic stress disorder in child witnesses to domestic violence
A sample of children aged 6-12, of whom 20 had witnessed domestic violence and and 15 had not, was examined for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and witness status was found to be a significant predictor of PTSD. Implications for clinical intervention are discussed
