Environmental change in SW Portugal during the last 3900 years BP
Ostracod, geochemical, mineralogical, and sedimentological proxies from a sediment core collected off Sagres (southwestern Portugal) were used to reconstruct Holocene environmental and hydrodynamic changes. Reduced variability of geochemical elements between ∼4000 and ∼1290 calibrated years before present suggests relatively stable conditions, regularly disturbed by higher-energy events. At ∼1290 cal yrs BP, a transition from arid to wetter condi…
Environmental changes and historical occupation at Oued Laksar (Ksar Seghir), Morocco
Laksar is a small river near the village of Ksar Seghir, located between Tangier and Ceuta (Morocco), strategic points to control the Strait of Gibraltar over centuries. The river outlets at the western part of a sandy beach that can block the fluvial discharge in years of low precipitation/river flow. The area is densely occupied since the 5th century BC, during the roman period and Early Middle Age in the archaeological site of Dhar d’Aseqfane,…
Salinity and water temperature assessment of the tidal marshes from the W Portuguese coast, as an ecological tool to palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on Foraminifera and Ostracoda assemblages
A seasonal study of temperature and salinity of estuarine and sediment interstitial water of tidal marshes was undertaken along three estuaries of W Portuguese coast (Minho, Tejo and Mira). The climatic N-S transition from wet Atlantic to Mediterranean features appear clearly imprinted in the distribution of tidal marsh assemblages, like foraminifera and ostracoda, mainly reflecting the water salinity gradient control. The Minho low estuary tidal m…
The AD 1755 tsunami deposits onshore and offshore of Algarve (south Portugal)
Marsh benthic Foraminifera response to estuarine hydrological balance driven by climate variability over the last 2000 yr (Minho estuary, NW Portugal)
A high-resolution study of a marsh sedimentary sequence from the Minho estuary provides a new palaeoenvironmental reconstruction from NW Iberian based on geological proxies supported by historical and instrumental climatic records. A low-salinity tidal flat, dominated by Trochamminita salsa , Haplophragmoides spp. and Cribrostomoides spp., prevailed from AD 140–1360 (Roman Warm Period, Dark Ages, Medieval Climatic Anomaly). This sheltered environ…
Lateglacial and Holocene coastal evolution in the Minho estuary (N Portugal)
The absence of accurate sea-level index points in SW Europe has long precluded the development of Holocene sea-level curves and the correct understanding of tectonic activity. In order to understand the coastal evolution and the major drivers in the Minho area, Portugal, we have combined micropaleontological and sedimentological data, where the chronological framework is provided by 13 radiocarbon ages. The stratigraphic reconstruction is in agre…
A tsunami record in the sedimentary archive of the central Algarve coast, Portugal
This study describes sedimentation associated with the tsunami generated by the Lisbon earthquake of ad 1755. It is argued here that the tsunami deposited a sand sheet across the Lagoa dos Salgados (central Algarve, Portugal), that is intercalated with late-Holocene estuarine/lagoonal sediments. A wide range of proxies (sedimentological, exoscopic and palaeontological) are used to establish the provenance of the sandy material as well as to const…
Assessing the performance of a foraminifera-based transfer function to estimate sea-level changes in northern Portugal
We assessed the performance of a transfer function model for sea-level studies using salt-marsh foraminifera from two estuaries of northern Portugal. An independent data set of 12 samples and 13 sub-fossil samples from a core were used to evaluate if reconstructions and errors derived from current models are adequate. Initial transfer function models provided very strong results as indicated by cross-validation (component 2; r 2 = 0.80–0.82; RMSE…
