When early childhood teachers read books about bullying to preschool aged children; Are the bystanders discussed
The reasons why most young children do not typically engage in defending behavior when they witness their peers being victimized are unclear. However, early socialization practices, such as how teachers read books depicting bullying incidents may be a contributing factor. This study involved structured video-recorded observations of 76 early childhood teachers (70 female) from 42 centers, reading two adapted books about bullying to small groups o…
An Observational Study of Parents Reading a Storybook About Bullying to Their Young Child
In the context of bullying the developmental progression of how and why most children remain as passive bystanders is unclear. Early socialization practices such as how parents read storybooks that depict bullying to their young children may be a contributing factor. Structured video‐recorded observations of 97 parent–child dyads (85 mothers) (M age of children = 37.9 m) were conducted in participants’ own homes. Participants were instructed to r…
Identifying effective support for sexual minority university students who have experienced bullying
Sexual minority university students experience higher rates of victimization than cis-heterosexual individuals experience and are at increased risk of mental health issues and poor academic achievement. This pilot study included 20 university students who self-identified as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and had experienced bullying. They completed an anonymous online survey about their openness regarding their sexuality/gender and their percepti…
Inclusion in Malaysian integrated preschools
Inclusive education has been introduced through a number of policy developments in Malaysia over the last 10 years but there is little research investigating the extent and nature of inclusive education for preschoolers with special educational needs (SEN). This study surveyed both regular and special education teachers in Malaysian integrated preschools asking them about the level and nature of inclusion taking place in their preschools and thei…
Effects of Learning About Historical Gender Discrimination on Early Adolescents’ Occupational Judgments and Aspirations
To examine the consequences of learning about gender discrimination, early adolescents ( n = 121, aged 10-14) were randomly assigned to receive either (a) standard biographical lessons about historical figures (standard condition) or (b) nearly identical lessons that included information about gender discrimination (discrimination condition). Additional students ( n = 46) did not receive lessons (control condition). At immediate posttest, student…

The Variability and Flexibility of Gender-Typed Toy Play
The Effect of Gender Context on Children's Social Behavior in a Limited Resource Situation
Knowing when to compete and when to cooperate to maximize opportunities for equal access to activities and materials in groups is critical to children's social and cognitive development. The present study examined the individual (gender, social competence) and contextual factors (gender context) that may determine why some children are more successful than others. One hundred and fifty‐six children (M age=6.5 years) were divided into 39 groups of…
Self-Focus, Other-Focus, and Interpersonal Needs as Correlates of Loneliness
Residential college students (44 men, 51 women) participated in a questionnaire study to clarify the relationship between loneliness, self- or other-focus, and interpersonal needs. Contrary to predictions, loneliness was unrelated to self-focus, other-focus, or the ability to elicit disclosure from others. However, sex differences were found on interpersonal needs. Specifically, loneliness in men was predicted by a lack of expressed inclusion and…
