Open Access•Sondre Sæther, Jorunn Spord Borgen et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2025•References: 36

Play, games and sport are a part of the content of physical education (PE), and has been the subject of a longstanding debate among educators internationally and in Scandinavian countries. Play refers to something unstructured and free, while sport is a controlled and managed activity. Drawing on Skovbjerg`s (2021) play theory, this article explores how PE teachers in Norwegian secondary schools structure play as part of their teaching and curric…

  • On investigating phenomena without losing sight of them

Jorunn Spord Borgen, Gunn Engelsrud•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2023•References: 4

In this article, the authors address some of the scientific challenges associated with using observation as a research method. The authors ask how researchers contextualise and understand observation in terms of its theoretical underpinnings and how it is conducted. Using a vignette in the kindergarten context, the authors explore how observation as a research method requires theoretical reflection in and on observational work. They discuss the r…

  • ‘When it’s something that you want to do.’ Exploring curriculum negotiation in Norwegian PE

Open Access•Eirik Aarskog, Dean Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Physical Education and Sport…•2022

Background: Student participation in curriculum negotiation has been widely regarded as beneficial for student engagement, motivation, and learning. Within the physical education (PE) context however, several scholars claim that these benefits are seldom realized. • Childhood Cultures in Transformation

Open Access•Elin Eriksen Ødegaard, Jorunn Spord Borgen•BOOK•Childhood Cultures in Transformatio…•2021

This book investigates and uncover paradoxes and ambivalences that are actualised when seeking to make the right choices in the best interests of the child. The 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child established a milestone for the 20th century. Many of these ideas still stand, but time calls for new reflections, empirical descriptions and knowledge as provided in this book. Special attention is directed to the conceptualisatio…

Jorunn Spord Borgen, Bjørg Oddrun Hallås et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 10

This article explores the relationship between physical education as a school subject, and physical activity health initiatives in schools. Drawing on curriculum theory and discourse theory we study policy documents related to physical education and school-based physical activity initiatives. We explore the boundaries of knowledge between physical education and physical activity that can be identified in two Norwegian policy documents. We are par…

  • What were you thinking? A methodological approach for exploring decision-making and learning in physical education

Eirik Aarskog, Dean Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The broad purpose of this paper is to consider the relationship between decision-making and learning. Specifically, our aim is to propose a methodology that provides a theoretical framing along with procedures for investigating this relationship in Physical Education (PE). By utilizing selected parts of John Dewey’s educational theories, the paper presents a theoretical exposition of decision-making as an individual process containing both ‘pract…

  • Young Artists and the Charismatic Myth

Sigrid Røyseng, Per Mangset et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2007•Cited by: 19•References: 4

This article focuses on artist identities in contemporary culture. In particular, the authors have studied how young Norwegian artists identify with the term “artist” in general and the charismatic myth of the artist in particular. It is argued that it is fruitful to treat the charismatic myth of the artist as a discourse that must be analysed in relation to specific social and cultural contexts and potentially under continuous reconstruction. Th…
