Toward Emergent Holism
This study develops a mutually constitutive account to examine how systems science advances a renewed, emergence‐centred holism. By tracing three developmental waves of systems science, it identifies the intrinsic impetus for holistic philosophy and introduces relational and generative holism to articulate the complex relationship between parts and wholes. As systems science matures, emergent holism emerges as a robust paradigm bridging empirical…
Creative‐Becoming Holism
Creative holism has garnered significant scholarly interest in China since its introduction into Chinese academia in the mid‐2000s. Building on and contributing to the ongoing dialogue between ‘East and West’ systems thinking, in this article, we propose ‘Creative‐Becoming Holism’ as an attempt to advance creative holism. Our theoretical construal emphasises the dynamic process of generation and evolution as central to holism, which we consider t…
The Future of Systems Thinking
To those who believe that systems thinking (ST) can make real differences in human life and the wider ecology, the future of ST is always an inspiring topic with theoretical and practical significance, and the topic once again generates intense reflection and debates. Presented in this special issue are nine papers selected from recent reflections and debates. While each posits a particular perspective and emphasis, the papers all focus on the ce…
Theoretical Systems Thinking and Its Research Mode
Theoretical systems thinking (T‐ST) and applied systems thinking (A‐ST) represent two complementary systems thinking research paths. A‐ST focuses on using systems ideas and systems methodologies to solve practical problems in different fields; T‐ST focuses on discussing the nature of systems thinking and providing theoretical support for applying systems methodologies. The theoretical sources of T‐ST primarily originate from the traditional Easte…
National analysis of urinary cadmium concentration and kidney stone
Background The association between urinary cadmium and kidney stone risk is inconsistent in previous studies, which needs further exploration. This study was performed to explore the association between urinary cadmium and kidney stone. Materials and methods Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2020) were included and further analyzed. Urinary cadmium was stratified into quartiles with quartile 1 (Q1: 0.025–0.104 μ…
Yuan‐Sheng dialectical holism and systems thinking
From the perspective of Laudan's ‘research traditions’, this paper attempts to propose the ‘systemism research tradition’ (SRT) that integrates Chinese and Western holisms based on complex systems science. First, we establish Yuan‐Sheng dialectical holism as the ontological assumption of the SRT, emphasising that the world is a ‘relation‐centric’ system. Yuan refers to specific time–space relations, and the becoming of the world ( Sheng ) from Yu…
The system‐process view of life from the perspective of systems science and its enlightenment to artificial life
The development of systems science has provided a new interdisciplinary approach to understanding the nature of life. General system theory, developed by Bertalanffy, understands life as open, dynamic and autonomous systems. The self‐organisation theory, represented by Prigogine, takes life as a self‐organising process‐structure that obtains sufficient negative entropy by exchanging material and energy with the environment. The complex adaptive s…
