Witnessing Otherwise
This article focuses on art projects by Marina Zurkow, Katie Paterson and Sandra Sawatzky to explore climate witnessing as a practice that enables acknowledging and responding to climate change and helps establish an ethical relationship with the more-than-human world. Drawing on the insights of new materialism and material ecocriticism, I discuss the representation of matter as agentive and storied and examine the connections between reframing c…
Petrocapitalism, displacement, and (im)mobilities in Imbolo Mbue’s How Beautiful We Were
In this article, I analyse the movement of human and nonhuman bodies in Imbolo Mbue’s How Beautiful We Were (2021). I argue that the depiction of the environmental and social damage caused by oil extraction in the novel resists the dominant discourse of the Anthropocene by refusing to universalise the threats produced by ecological crisis, embedding environmental vulnerability within histories of colonial violence and forced displacement and part…
Techno-utopie dla zagrożonego świata. Posthumanizm i solarpunk
This article examines the conceptual foundations and evolution of solarpunk: a literary, artistic, and social movement that emerged in the early 21st century.By focusing on the interactions between humans, technology, and the environment in solarpunk texts, postulates and activities, the article demonstrates that the movement adopts the posthumanist perspective to emphasize relationality and to highlight the entangled relations between the human,…

PASSERSBY: THE POLITICS AND POETICS OF AFROPOLITANISM In this article, I discuss the notion of Afropolitanism as presented by Taiye Selasi in various articles and in her Ghana Must Go (2013), “an Afropolitan novel” and an example of Afropolitan literary aesthetics. I present an overview of the major ways in which the concept has been developed and contested and briefly discuss its usage in popular culture and art projects. Throughout the article,…
Silence and fecundity in Carmen Maria Machado’s “Her body and other parties”
In the final chapter of Writing and Difference titled “Ellipsis”, Jacques Derrida describes lack as the element that is constitutive of meaning – what is missing from the book is “invisible and undeterminable”, yet it “redoubles and consecrates” it, so that “all meaning is altered by this lack” (1978: 296). Following Derrida’s cue that writing “is of an elliptical essence” (ibid: 296), I focus on lacks and silences in Carmen Maria Machado’s short…
