  • Minding the Gap

    Open Access•Golan Shalvi•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Archaeology•2026

Purple dye was an iconic status symbol in the ancient Mediterranean, yet tracing the expansion and shift of production from the Aegean to the Levant encounters substantial methodological difficulties. Using Tel Shiqmona – a unique industrial centre with a continuous Iron Age sequence – as an archaeological benchmark, this study defines detailed and granular criteria for identifying production. Applying these criteria reveals a 300‐year ‘gap’ ( c …

  • The Assyrian–Egyptian–Babylonian transition in the southern Levant as seen from Megiddo

Open Access•Golan Shalvi, Stefanos Gimatzidi et al.•ARTICLE•Levant•2026

In the southern Levant, the stormy 7th century BCE saw the transition from Neo-Assyrian to Egyptian to Babylonian imperial control. Historical sources illuminating this process are scarce, as are high- precision archaeological data. Tel Megiddo, the site of the Assyrian provincial capital Magiddû, is one of the archaeological exceptions as it preserves a late Iron Age stratigraphic sequence. Recently published data and interpretations by the Megi…

  • Challenging Conceptions

    Open Access•Golan Shalvi, Shlomit Bechar•ARTICLE•Tel Aviv•2025•References: 7

The northernmost part of Tel Hazor’s lower city, Area H, was first excavated nearly seventy years ago, revealing the remarkable Orthostat Temple. Despite its significance, this area was not investigated further until 2023, when excavations were renewed to reassess its stratigraphy and settlement patterns. Our findings challenge previous assumptions regarding the extent and settlement density of the Late Bronze Age city at Hazor. Contrary to earli…

  • Between Israel and Phoenicia

    Open Access•Golan Shalvi, Ayelet Gilboa•ARTICLE•Tel Aviv•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 6

The history of Tel Shiqmona, on Israel’s Carmel coast, in the Iron Age has remained almost totally obscure since its excavation some 50 years ago. Recent analysis has revealed the site’s singularity—the only one around the Mediterranean that can be demonstrated to have produced the luxurious purple dye for half a millennium. This article is the first discussion of a central episode (three strata) in the site’s history. We argue that during the La…

  • The long 7th century BCE at Tel Shiqmona (Israel)

    Golan Shalvi, Ayelet Gilboa•ARTICLE•Levant•2022

The 7th century in the southern Levant is characterized by Assyrian rule and subsequent Egyptian domination. Despite the relatively violent nature of this century, and abundant historical documentation, occupations both in the southern Levant and Lebanon are dated with low resolution. This deficiency was mainly created by a lack of destruction layers within this century, resulting in a dearth of chronological anchors for ceramic developments. At …

  • The Pottery of Tel Esur, a Rural Canaanite Late Bronze Age Site on the Via Maris

Golan Shalvi, Shmuel Bar et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Schools…•2019

Tel Esur is identifiable with D-f-tj (Djefty), mentioned by Thutmose III in his description of his march to Megiddo through the ʿAruna Pass. Recent excavations provide the first unequivocal indication that the site was inhabited during the Late Bronze Age as a farm/hamlet, perhaps also a waystation. The main architectural feature is a large partially-excavated structure, whose contents—mainly pottery—were well preserved by a destruction level. We…
