This article looks at themes that have emerged from the work of the author over the last three decades and their resonance with ideas advanced by Shaun McNiff. The author reflects on how the thinking, writing and inspiration of McNiff have pertained to her work as an artist and art therapist with displacement, social upheaval, trauma, disaster and conflict, inside and outside of clinical settings. The three themes addressed in this article includ…

    Open Access•Jordan S Potash, Debra L Kalmanowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Peacebuilding &…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Surveying the role of the arts in social movements offers approaches for ways in which art therapists can be collaborators in peacebuilding. The authors explore the physical and psychological meaning of borders and the role that kite activity played in psychosocial support in this uncertain and frequently volatile environment, with recently arrived refugees. The kite activity is explored for its potential to enhance resilience, its capacity to connect with life be…

  • On the seam

Debra L Kalmanowitz, Debra Kalmanowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Arts and Health•2013

This article questions the notions of fiction as truth in research and the role that visual art can play in this enquiry. Grounded in the author’s work, in the context of political violence, the article suggests that there are multiple ways of knowing, and the use of art allows for the possibility of exploring that which may be implicit, largely unspoken, and at times not easily accessible. This potential for images to make explicit that which is…
