  • Mid- to late Holocene centennial-scale shifts of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly winds

    Open Access•Jérôme Kaiser, James A Collins et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026•Referências: 98

Centennial-timescale variability of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly wind belt (SHW) is poorly documented, mainly due to a paucity of long, high-resolution climate records from the Southern Hemisphere. Moreover, the role played by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and solar variability in controlling the SHW is not well understood. We present a 7000-year record of grain size end-member modelling and C/N from Lak…

  • Holocene sea-surface temperature variability in the Chilean fjord region

Open Access•Magaly Caniupán, Frank Lamy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

Here we provide three new Holocene (11–0 cal ka BP) alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) records from the southernmost Chilean fjord region (50–53°S). SST estimates may be biased towards summer temperature in this region, as revealed by a large set of surface sediments. The Holocene records show consistently warmer than present-day SSTs except for the past ~ 0.6 cal ka BP. However, they do not exhibit an early Holocene temperature optim…

  • Millennial-scale surface water changes in the Southeast Pacific over the past ∼70 kyr

    Open Access•Frank Lamy•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Quaternary changes in dust input to the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean

    Open Access•Frank Lamy•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • North Atlantic control on precipitation pattern in the eastern Mediterranean/Black Sea region during the last glacial

Open Access•Ola Kwiecien, Olga Kwiecien et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Based on proxy records from western Black Sea cores, we provide a comprehensive study of climate change during the last glacial maximum and late-glacial period in the Black Sea region. For the first time we present a record of relative changes in precipitation for NW Anatolia based on variations in the terrigenous supply expressed as detrital carbonate concentration. The good correspondence between reconstructed rainfall intensity in NW Anatolia …

  • Sources and modes of terrigenous sediment input to the Chilean continental slope

    Open Access•Jan-Berend W Stuut, Sabine Kasten et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007

  • A Pronounced Dry Event Recorded Around 4.2 ka in Brine Sediments from the Northern Red Sea

    Open Access•Helge W Arz, Frank Lamy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Partly laminated sediments were sampled from the brine-filled, anoxic Shaban Deep basin in the northern Red Sea. At about 4200 cal yr BP more than two millennia of anoxic sedimentation is replaced by a sub-oxic facies strongly suggesting the episodic absence of the brine. At the same time stable oxygen isotopes from surface dwelling foraminifera show a sharp increase (within less than 100 yr) pointing to a strong positive salinity anomaly at the …

  • The late quaternary paleoenvironment of Chile as seen from marine archives

    Open Access•Jan-Berend W Stuut, Margarita Marchant et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2006

Many variables have been used to reconstruct Chilean paleoenvironmental changes during the late Quaternary. In this paper we present an overview of a number of these variables, so-called proxies, that have been inferred from marine sediments from the Chilean continental margin and summarise the results. In general, a glacial-interglacial pattern of climate changes can be recognised in the proxy records with high-frequency variabilities superposed…

  • Climate variability at the southern boundaries of the Namib (southwestern Africa) and Atacama (northern Chile) coastal deserts during the last 120,000 yr

    Open Access•Jan-Berend W Stuut, Frank Lamy•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

In this study, we present grain-size distributions of the terrigenous fraction of two deep-sea sediment cores from the SE Atlantic (offshore Namibia) and from the SE Pacific (offshore northern Chile), which we "unmix" into subpopulations and which are interpreted as coarse eolian dust, fine eolian dust, and fluvial mud. The downcore ratios of the proportions of eolian dust and fluvial mud subsequently represent paleocontinental aridity records of…

  • Mediterranean Moisture Source for an Early-Holocene Humid Period in the Northern Red Sea

Open Access•Helge W Arz, Frank Lamy et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2003

Paleosalinity and terrigenous sediment input changes reconstructed on two sediment cores from the northernmost Red Sea were used to infer hydrological changes at the southern margin of the Mediterranean climate zone during the Holocene. Between approximately 9.25 and 7.25 thousand years ago, about 3‰ reduced surface water salinities and enhanced fluvial sediment input suggest substantially higher rainfall and freshwater runoff, which thereafter d…

  • High-Resolution Marine Record of Climatic Change in Mid-latitude Chile during the Last 28,000 Years Based on Terrigenous Sediment Parameters

Open Access•Frank Lamy, Dierk Hebbeln et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

Marine sediment cores from the continental slope off mid-latitude Chile (33°S) were studied with regard to grain-size distributions and clay mineral composition. The data provide a 28,000-yr 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry-dated record of variations in the terrigenous sediment supply reflecting modifications of weathering conditions and sediment source areas in the continental hinterland. These variations can be interpreted in terms of the pal…
