Examining action-based imagination as a facilitator of perspective-taking in social issues
Examining the Japanese Version of the Biographical Inventory of Creative Behavior Among Adults and Adolescents Using Item Response Theory
Measures of creative behavior have typically been developed for adults (Biographical Inventory of Creative Behavior [BICB]). Such measures are important for examining the mechanisms of creativity and for understanding how creativity education relates to creative behavior. In Japan, where creativity education has become increasingly emphasized in schools, a scale needs to be developed that can assess creative behavior not only among adults but als…
Do role models enhance creativity? A case of Stéphane Mallarmé
Creative lives are full of encounters with admirable role models and inspirational works. How does learning from them enable creators to accomplish distinguished achievements? This question of how creative individuals develop through interaction and context is vital to the development of creative expertise. However, quantitatively addressing this question has been an unsolved issue. In this paper, to answer this question, we use a methodological …
Process Modification and Uncontrollability in an Expert Contemporary Artist's Creative Processes
As a case study that consists of two parts, this research investigates how a pro‐c class expert artist thinks and acts during art making, paying special attention to exploratory behaviors and task completion processes. In Part 1 of this case study, we videoed an artist's authentic creative process in his studio. We interviewed him about his drawing process by showing him the video recording right after the drawing. We conducted a retrospective in…
Development of a Japanese Version of the Creative Mindset Scale ( CMS ) Using Item Response Theory
The purpose of this study was to develop the Japanese version of the Creative Mindset Scale (CMS‐J) and examine its psychometric properties using classical test theory (CTT) and item response theory (IRT). Three surveys were conducted to examine the psychometric properties. Study 1 ( n = 700) confirmed the conceptual structure of the CMS‐J. Confirmatory factor analyses of the CMS‐J suggested a two‐factor structure, as in the original scale. The t…
Development of the Japanese Version of the Short Scale of Creative Self 1, 2
This study aimed to translate the Short Scale of Creative Self (SSCS) into Japanese and examine its psychometric properties. In total, 1,436 participants (Study 1: N = 957, Study 2: N = 479) completed the questionnaires. In Study 1, confirmatory factor analyses for Japanese versions of the scales resulted in bi‐factor structures comprising one general factor and two subfactors; namely, creative self‐efficacy (CSE) and creative personal identity (…
How to effectively overcome fixation
As a cognitive state that impedes idea generation, fixation has been well studied across various domains in relation to the cultivation of creativity. With the aim of contributing to the development of an effective approach to overcoming fixation in order to enhance creativity, a systematic review is conducted of 53 experimental studies concerning the source of fixation and the problem type, which are two critical factors influencing the effectiv…
Artificial Intelligence & Creativity
With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), the field of creativity faces new opportunities and challenges. This manifesto explores several scenarios of human–machine collaboration on creative tasks and proposes “fundamental laws of generative AI” to reinforce the responsible and ethical use of AI in the creativity field. Four scenarios are proposed and discussed: “Co‐Cre‐AI‐tion,” “Organic,” “Plagiarism 3.0,” and “Shut down,” each illustrat…

The Process of Art‐making and Creative Expertise
The present study investigates how emerging/young and established/expert artists create artwork, paying special attention to modifications in the art‐making process. Here, “process modification” is the means by which artists generate new artistic concepts by modifying elements of their previous artwork. To examine whether emerging artists use such modifications in the same manner as experts, we interviewed 28 contemporary artists (including 14 ex…
How Does Art Viewing Inspires Creativity
Professional and amateur artists seek inspiration from viewing the works of others to enhance their creativity. This paper focuses on inspiration for artistic creation through art viewing by reviewing psychology studies on what types of artwork promote individuals’ inspiration for creation (inspiring artwork) and how they experience inspiration through their art appreciation (the appreciation process). In particular, we claim that a dual focus —t…
Technology acceptance model in technology-enhanced OCLL contexts
One of the crucial issues for successful technology-enhanced out-of-class language learning (OCLL) is the learners’ continuance intention to use technology. Considering the strong mutual relationship between learners’ intention and motivation, the present study extended the technology acceptance model (TAM) with the self-determination theory (SDT) to investigate Japanese EFL learners’ intention to use learning technologies for OCLL. The study was…
