An Interrupting Presence
This essay is at its core an attempt to learn from Toni Morrison’s “delight” in confronting problems of race in classical American literature in the book Playing in the Dark (1993). That attempt to learn from Morrison becomes a confrontation with the problem of traditions, race, and racism more generally. Christian theology and Christian tradition remain primarily in the background for most of the essay. They slowly come to the fore in dialogue w…
Fifty Years of Conversation on the Nature of Theology
Daring After Hart
This article reconsiders the problem of human freedom in the wake of David Bentley Hart’s That All Shall Be Saved . It renews and reasserts the crisis of every human freedom’s eternal destiny. With insights from Maurice Blondel, Bernard Lonergan, and Hans Urs von Balthasar, the article makes a case for distinctive conceptions of human freedom, divine agency, and the problem of hell. The article closes by reading Theo-Drama as a map marking places…

This review essay explores the central thesis of Thomas Pfau's Incomprehensible Certainty. It explores, specifically, the basic distinction between picture and image that shapes the book as a fundamental apparatus.1 But I am in tension with that distinction. Non est falsum et verum in rebus sed in mente.2 I do not know that Pfau disagrees with me, strictly speaking. But it is also the case that he desires for images a sort of substance that allow…
Balthasar Beyond European Modernity
This article aims at understanding Balthasar in such a way that leads him beyond himself, especially when it comes to Balthasar’s grasp of the relationship of his work to Europe and to European modernity. The danger of Balthasar’s theological aesthetics is not that it ends up being “all too” Mediterranean but that it risks succumbing to Eurocentrism. This article posits that the Balthasarian standpoint is open—in its own terms, by its own logic—t…
