Toward a New Theology of Children in advance
The methodology undergirding most Catholic and Protestant theological reflection on children, broad and diverse as it is, remains adultist and lacks reliable accounts of children’s theological perspectives and experiences. Using “Child Theology” scholarship as an example, I highlight problematic aspects of this approach and demonstrate that it reinscribes assumptions about children that result in injustice and harm. I argue that, in order to rela…
New Horizons for Justice in Theologies of Childhood and Children
Catholic theologians have called for a more robust theology of childhood and children in light of global clergy sexual abuse. While affirming the need to develop more substantive theological reflection about children, I express concern that Catholic thought on this topic has been adultist, solely reflecting adults’ perspectives and concerns to the detriment of children. To relate to children justly and engage in theological scholarship that foste…
Envisioning a Just Response to the Catholic Clergy Sexual Abuse Crisis
In this article, I argue that the only way Catholics will experience the conversion of heart necessary to engage in authentic Christian discipleship and respond justly to the clergy sexual abuse crisis is to enter empathetically into the traumatic reality of the crisis. Recognition of the degree to which clergy abuse harms victim-survivors and subverts the church’s purpose to be the body of Christ leads to the moral obligation to prioritize urgen…
Justice for Children
A major oversight in Catholicism’s clergy abuse crisis is its failure to examine how assumptions about children and norms concerning adult-children interactions contributed to child sexual abuse and bishops’ systematic cover-up. An adequate response must include new practices based on a revised child-centered account of what constitutes justice for children. In this paper, I develop an account of justice drawing on four sources: 1) Margaret Farle…
College Hookup Culture and Christian Ethics
What happens at college parties? Why do students dress and behave the way they do? Who has power, and what kind? And are college students happy overall with party and hookup culture? In response to undergraduates’ skepticism of researchers’ accounts of hookup culture, the author engaged 126 college students as ethnographers to observe and analyze this complex social reality at parties. Part I presents their results, revealing a disillusionment wi…
Neighbor-Love and Justice
According to the author’s reading of Metz, a third aspect of becoming fully human is a form of neighbor-love exemplified by Christ with three interrelated commitments: (1) letting go of one’s false, ego-driven self; (2) becoming vulnerable and authentic in our relationships; and (3) pursuing justice and solidarity for and among our neighbors both near and far. For Metz, an intrinsic unity exists among love of God, love of neighbor, and love of se…
The Limits of Poststructuralism for Feminist Theology
There is much debate within feminist theology about which construal of subjectivity and agency best promotes the feminist aim to promote justice and fl ourishing for humanity and the rest of creation. A growing number of feminist theologians argue for the need to dismiss modern construals of subjectivity and agency and adopt a poststructuralist framework. This article examines the poststructuralist concepts of subjectivity and agency according to…
