Engaging With a Community of Practice in Dementia: Impacts on Skills, Knowledge, Networks and Accessing Support
BACKGROUND: To deliver implementable, meaningful research and advance knowledge, different stakeholders need to be brought together regularly via a suitable platform or community of practice. The Liverpool Dementia & Ageing Research Forum, set up in 2019, is a public/professional community of practice, providing in-person and remote events and activities to connect people living with dementia, unpaid carers, health and social care professionals, …
Haunted attraction: The effects of recreational fear on interpersonal bonding
Recreational fear experiences, such as haunted attractions, paradoxically attract millions of patrons annually; despite fear being a generally negative emotion, people will pay money to experience it. Some have stipulated that part of the appeal is interpersonal-anecdotally, such experiences appear to bring people closer together. We put this idea to the test in five studies conducted at three commercial haunted attractions. In Studies 1-4, feeli…

Pronunciation and Linguistic Bias in Interviewing Arabic Instructors
The present qualitative study reports on a sample of six Arabic instructors (out of 30) who were asked to modify/correct their pronunciation of Arabic as it was considered "unsuitable" by members of the recruitment committee. Almost half the instructors believed that the corrections involved linguistic bias. The others did not take issue and welcomed such direction since they believed that modification may improve the learning-teaching process by…
Health Inequities in the Care Pathways for People Living with Young- and Late-Onset Dementia: From Pre-Covid-19 to Early Pandemic
People with YOD and LOD and their carers require better support in accessing services after a diagnosis. Greater understanding of the pathways through which inequalities materialise are needed, especially those that might have been disrupted or exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic
Four-Year Trajectories of Health-Related Quality of Life in People Living with HIV: Impact of Unmet Basic Needs across Age Groups in Positive Spaces, Healthy Places
Despite significant advances in antiretroviral therapy, unmet basic needs can negatively impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people living with HIV, especially as they age. We aimed to examine the effect of unmet basic needs across age groups on changes in HRQoL over a 4-year period in persons with HIV. Physical and mental HRQoL scores from the Positive Spaces, Healthy Spaces cohort interviewed in 2006 (n = 538), 2007 (n = 506), and …
Women’s Refuges and Critical Social Work: Opportunities and Challenges in Advancing Social Justice
Women’s refuges play a crucial role in responding to the needs of women and children experiencing family violence; yet there has been limited research conducted into their operations, practices and challenges faced. This article is informed by critical social work’s theoretical tradition of seeking to end social injustice and analyses key opportunities and challenges of providing refuge amidst a neo-liberal context. We draw on interviews and focu…
Unmet basic needs negatively affect health-related quality of life in people aging with HIV: Results from the Positive Spaces, Healthy Places study
The availability and accessibility of food security, appropriate clothing and stable housing for people living with HIV who are aging need to become a higher priority for program planners and decision makers
Not Just “A Roof over Your Head”: The Meaning of Healthy Housing for People Living with HIV
The literature has identified housing as a fundamental unmet need for people living with HIV; yet there has been little qualitative evidence exploring housing and HIV, particularly from a Canadian context. This paper focuses on our qualitative analyses of the housing experiences of 48 HIV-positive people living in Ontario. Findings from our interviews illustrate healthy housing as a dynamic interconnection between health, housing and other social…
Response to Montemaggi’s Dream of Spiritual Capital
We are grateful for Francesca Montemaggi’s extended critique of our literature review. We are also grateful to the Editor of Implicit Religion for giving us the opportunity to respond to her critique. Our response will have two emphases. One is a review of Montemaggi’s interpretation of our original article. The other takes a broader and more thematic perspective

An Evaluation Framework for Health Promotion: Theory, Quality and Effectiveness
There is increasing demand for evaluation work funded by public agencies to become more focused on demonstrating effectiveness. Focusing evaluation on outcomes and effectiveness meets the information needs of strategic planners and policy makers, but other stakeholders involved in managing, delivering or using public services and programmes may use other assessment criteria, such as improving the quality of programmes or programme design. The nec…
When Was Rosalie Rayner Born
A search by James B. Watson for definitive proof of his mother's date of birth ultimately proved fruitless, although one piece of evidence he discovered strongly suggests that Rosalie Rayner was born in 1899, not 1898 as some sources indicate. Watson believes that his father, John Broadus Watson, wrote his 1936 autobiographical essay before Rayner's death because afterward he was too devastated to have written it

Pigs, Fodder, and the Jones Effect in Postipomoean New Guinea
The use of the sweet potato as fodder, a central factor in recent changes in the human ecology of the Central Highlands of New Guinea (CHNG), supported a substantial increase of the previously small pig herd. With this modification of adaptive strategies came new uses of the regional habitat and new social arrangements. Among probable motives for the change were environmental stress, dietary advantage, and conscious intergroup competition. Interg…
Socio-Ecological Change Among the Fore of New Guinea [and Comments and Replies]
Historical reconstruction based on contemporary evidence shows that adoption of the sweet potato by the Fore approximately a century ago set in motion a series of events that transformed their institutions and natural surroundings. As the consequences of this act unraveled, the Fore moved to virgin lands, their population increased, the character of the living space they occupied was altered, and they were confronted with new kinds of social and …

Why Exceptions? The Logic of Cross-Cultural Analysis [and Comments and Reply]
This paper discusses the factors causing exceptions to rules in the social sciences in general and in social anthropology in particular. Exceptions may occur through defective classification by ethnologists. For example, the ethnologist may define the phenomena under consideration poorly. The importance of using operational definitions must therefore be stressed. He may class phenomena in the same category without making sure that their frequency…
Society as Organized Flow: The Tairora Case
Of roughly twenty years' standing, the analysis of Central Highland New Guinea social systems remains inconclusive. Problematical features basic to these (and perhaps other) social systems have received descriptive cachets like "looseness," "openness," and "flexibility," suggestive of regional peculiarity--even anomaly--but bereft of explanatory value. The significance of intermittent, major realignment of local groups through migration tends to …

Local reports of his career are examined from various angles, in relation to: socio‐cultural context, including the place of a strong man in a moral system with an egalitarian emphasis; historicity and validity; and the nature, conditions, and limitations of…
