A multidimensional analysis of university students’ everyday reading and writing
Many studies have described primarily curricular and ideal forms of university student. Considerably fewer have focused on extracurricular and everyday/typical university student English writing. Describing this language may provide a different perspective of the target for EAP learners. Thus, the present study’s purpose is to describe the linguistic/functional nature of everyday American university student written language use by creating a Corp…
From unannotated to annotated: The impact of text internal variation on register predictions of long historical documents
The utility of historical language databases is hindered by their complexity, text variety, and lack of register information. We investigate the feasibility of deriving linguistically motivated and reliable register predictions for unannotated, long historical texts. We fine-tune BERT-based deep learning models using register-annotated data from the Corpus of Founding Era American English and predict registers for different text parts of unannota…
Predicting lexico-grammatical competence in L2 Spanish writing through multiple lexical diversity measures
The present study compares several lexical diversity (LD) measures to determine which measure, or measures, best predict receptive lexico-grammatical ability in written L2 Spanish, and whether a composite LD score is better than any single measure. We analyzed 1,225 written responses with eight different LD measures: six popular measures, a composite score based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of those six measures, and the traditional TTR …
Lexical Complexity in US Statutes
Statutory language in English is difficult for the average person to understand. Although the plain language movement has gained momentum, the US federal government has been slow to change guidelines for writing statutes, resulting in linguistically complex language. This complexity is potentially problematic if residents cannot understand the laws by which they are bound. The present study aims to evaluate the lexical complexity of federal statu…
What are university students doing with language: A proportional description of student processing mode and register use in an American university
The contracts word list: Integral vocabulary for reading and writing English contracts
Research in progress: Applied linguistics at Northern Arizona University, USA
Founded in 1990, the Applied Linguistics program at Northern Arizona University (NAU) represents a staple of scholarly activity and graduate training in the field. Indeed, the program, which consists of ten core faculty members and approximately 30 Ph.D. students has been and remains highly active and vibrant in terms of professional/societal involvement and, of course, research. This article highlights recent and current projects carried out by …
More Than Frequency? Exploring Predictors of Word Difficulty for Second Language Learners
Frequency is often the only variable considered when researchers or teachers develop vocabulary materials for second language (L2) learners. However, researchers have also found that many other variables affect vocabulary acquisition. In this study, we explored the relationship between L2 vocabulary acquisition and a variety of lexical characteristics using vocabulary recognition test data from L2 English learners. Conducting best subsets multipl…
