Introducing SourceXplorer, an open-source statistical tool for guided lithic sourcing
Investigating the application of Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material in sedimentary lithic artifacts for archaeological provenancing applications in the Canadian Rockies
The chemical compositions of toolstones composed of clastic and chemical sedimentary rock are often not distinct among procurement locations. However, sedimentary toolstone sources may show variations in the structural characteristics of the included carbonaceous material (CM) related to differences in their postdepositional histories, providing a potential proxy by which procurement locations, rather than individual rock units, can be assessed a…
Is it hot enough? A multi-proxy approach shows variations in cremation conditions during the Metal Ages in Belgium
Splitting obsidian
Underwater spirits and sacred places
Indigenous people throughout Native America often bestowed special meaning and veneration upon certain landscape features. This is the case for a series of artesian springs in the upper Osage River basin in western Missouri. Artifacts and features recorded at four springs near the confluence of the Pomme de Terre and Osage Rivers indicate that particular activities were conducted around these artesian spring conduits, actions that suggest that th…

A new Cambrian black pigment used during the late Middle Palaeolithic discovered at Scladina Cave (Andenne, Belgium)
W. Raymond Wood’s Interdisciplinary Approach to Archaeology
The career of w. Raymond Wood is reviewed in terms of his contributions to interdisciplinary studies in archaeology. This paper contends that his academic training at the University of Nebraska and the University of Oregon influenced this holistic approach to archaeological research. Examples of his interdisciplinary approach to research are described for projects ranging from Quaternary studies in the western Ozark Highland of Missouri to ecolog…

Plant Remains From a Woodland Storage Pit, Boney Spring, Missouri
An Early Woodland storage pit, dated at 1920±50 BP, was found in the peat layer surrounding the spring feeder at Boney Spring, Benton County, western Missouri, in association with a burial and other cultural material. The pit contents were unusually well preserved, apparently because of the saturated condition of the spring deposits. Materials from the pit were compared with plant remains from a control block removed from the surrounding contempo…
Fristoe Burial Mounds from the Prairie Border Region of Southwestern Missouri
Three burial tumuli in southwestern Missouri near the Kansas line, indanger of destruction, were excavated by the University of Missouri. These sites, the Alberti, Amity, and Clemons Mounds, are all interpreted as components of the Fristoe Burial Complex, a Woodland mortuary complex of the we stern Ozarks. The identification of these sites as components of this manifestation has extended the geographical range of the Fristoe Burial Complex to the…
