  • Future projections of wind energy potentials in the arctic for the 21st century under the RCP8.5 scenario from regional climate models (Arctic-Cordex)

  • Mummified Burial of a Child From the Saryg-Bulun Burial Ground (Central Tuva). New Data From Archaeology, Radiography, Anthropology and Genetics

    Open Access•Мarina Kilunovskaya, В А Семенов et al.•ARTICLE•Ural Historical Journal•2021

In 1988 on the right bank of the Yenisei River in Central Tuva, two burial mounds from the Saryg-Bulun burial ground were excavated. Burial No 5 attracted special attention of archaeologists — it contained the partially mummified remains of a child with a rich and unusual inventory (bow, quiver with arrows, a hat, engraving on a wooden handle) in a wooden block. A recent genetic analysis made it possible to establish, contrary to expectations, th…

  • Responses of Arctic cyclones to biogeophysical feedbacks under future warming scenarios in a regional Earth system model

Open Access•Mirseid Akperov, Wenxin Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Arctic cyclones, as a prevalent feature in the coupled dynamics of the Arctic climate system, have large impacts on the atmospheric transport of heat and moisture and deformation and drifting of sea ice. Previous studies based on historical and future simulations with climate models suggest that Arctic cyclogenesis is affected by the Arctic amplification of global warming, for instance, a growing land-sea thermal contrast. We thus hypothesize tha…

  • A link between surface air temperature and extreme precipitation over Russia from station and reanalysis data

    Open Access•М А Алешина, В А Семенов et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Precipitation extremes are widely thought to intensify with global warming due to an exponential growth following the Clausius–Clapeyron (C–C) equation which links the atmosphere water vapor saturation pressure with air temperature. However, a number of recent studies based on station and reanalyzes data for the contemporary period showed that scaling rates between extreme precipitation and temperature strongly depend on temperature range, moistu…

  • Observed changes in convective and stratiform precipitation in Northern Eurasia over the last five decades

Open Access•А V Chernokulsky, Fedor Kozlov et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Long-term changes in convective and stratiform precipitation in Northern Eurasia (NE) over the last five decades are estimated. Different types of precipitation are separated according to their genesis using routine meteorological observations of precipitation, weather conditions, and morphological cloud types for the period 1966–2016. From an initial 538 stations, the main analysis is performed for 326 stations that have no gaps and meet criteri…

  • Impact of Atlantic water inflow on winter cyclone activity in the Barents Sea

    Open Access•Mirseid Akperov, В А Семенов et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The impact of the Atlantic water inflow (AW inflow) into the Barents Sea on the regional cyclone activity in winter is analyzed in 10 ensemble simulations with the coupled Arctic atmosphere-ocean-sea ice model HIRHAM-NAOSIM for the 1979–2016 period. The model shows a statistically robust connection between AW inflow and climate variability in the Barents Sea. The analysis reveals that anomalously high AW inflow leads to changes in static stabilit…

  • Transit navigation through Northern Sea Route from satellite data and CMIP5 simulations

Open Access•Vyacheslav Khon, Vyacheslav C Khon et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

Rapid Arctic sea ice decline over the last few decades opens new perspectives for Arctic marine navigation. Further warming in the Arctic will promote the Northern Sea Route (NSR) as an alternative to the conventional Suez or Panama Canal routes for intercontinental shipping. Here we use both satellite data and CMIP5 ensemble of climate models to estimate the NSR transit window allowing intercontinental navigation between Atlantic and Pacific reg…

  • Warming in the Nordic Seas, North Atlantic storms and thinning Arctic sea ice

    Open Access•V A Alexeev, John E Walsh et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

Arctic sea ice over the last few decades has experienced a significant decline in coverage both in summer and winter. The currently warming Atlantic Water layer has a pronounced impact on sea ice in the Nordic Seas (including the Barents Sea). More open water combined with the prevailing atmospheric pattern of airflow from the southeast, and persistent North Atlantic storms such as the recent extremely strong Storm Frank in December 2015, lead to…

  • A Multidisciplinary Study of Burial Mounds and a Reconstruction of the Climate of the Turan-Uyuk Depression, Tuva, During the Scythian Period

    Open Access•Мarina Kilunovskaya, M E Kilunovskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2017•Citada por: 1

This article presents the results of a multidisciplinary study of Beloye Ozero-3—an early nomadic cemetery in the Turan-Uyuk intermountain trough in Tuva, southern Siberia. The radiocarbon analysis of wood from four of its mounds suggests that they were constructed 2565–2390 (calibrated, 1σ), or 2465–2380 (uncalibrated) years ago. In four mounds with a complex construction, burials in timber frames, spoil heap, and the peripheral ring were overla…

  • Nonlinear winter atmospheric circulation response to Arctic sea ice concentration anomalies for different periods during 1966–2012

    Open Access•V A Semenov, В А Семенов et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

The early 21st century was marked by several severe winters over Central Eurasia linked to a blocking anti-cyclone centered south of the Barents Sea. Severe winters in Central Eurasia were frequent in the 1960s when Arctic sea ice cover was anomalously large, and rare in the 1990s featuring considerably less sea ice cover; the 1960s being characterized by a low, the 1990s by a high phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation, the major driver of surf…

Chapter 3 of Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation. A Special Report of Working Groups I and II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
