Secular Changes in Body Build and Body Composition in Czech Preschool Children in the Context of Latent Obesity
Changes in lifestyle can be significantly reflected in growth and development. Adaptations to reduced levels of physical activity, together with non-corresponding nutritional intakes, can result in body build and body composition changes at an early age. The present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the secular trend of modifications of body composition and body mass index (BMI) in Czech preschoolers over the last two to three decades. Boys…
Twelve years after
Modifications of social, political, cultural, nutritional and behavioral factors in the Czech Republic during the nineties were not homogeneous, and/or of the same rate and character; however, the effect on child population was manifested. In all former socialist countries social contrasts have increased along with the modifications of the availability of the foodstuffs and changes in food preferences and aversions. Longitudinal study of anthropometric, skinfold, work, and motor characteristics of boys and girls, three to six years of age
Groups of preschool children were followed longitudinally: boys, n = 36, from 3.48 up to 6.02 years and girls, n = 22, from 3.53 up to 6.03 years. Anthropometric dimensions, skinfold thicknesses, reaction of the cardiovascular system to a work load (modified step test), motor performance, and hand grip strength were measured. Boys had greater values for height, weight, length, and circumferential measures, with the exception of the thigh. Boys ha…
Changes in somatotypes of European males between 17 and 24 years
In order to examine the possible changes in somatotype of young males, 14 boys who had been somatotyped annually from 11 to 18 years by the Heath‐Carter anthropometric rating method were re‐somatotyped at 24 years. The analysis focused on years 17, 18 and 24. Discriminant analysis, somatotype dispersion indices and distances, and the I‐index were used to analyze the data. The findings showed a significant shift in somatotype from ectomorphmesomor…
Influence of physical activity on stability of somatotypes in boys
The purpose of this study is to examine the stability of somato‐types of boys with different activity levels followed longitudinally for eight years. Thirty‐nine boys aged 11 were somatotyped annually (until 18 years) using the Heath‐Carter anthropometric rating method. Three sub‐groups were formed according to their levels of systematic physical activity designated High, Moderate, and Low Activity. There were no differences in somatochart distri…
Body Composition and Physical Fitness [and Comments and Reply]
Body composition, changing characteristically not only according to age and sex but also according to the balance of energy input and output and functional state, has become one of the most interesting morphological features of human physique. Cross-sectional studies have revealed remarkable differences in the proportions of lean body mass and fat related to adaptation for intensive physical activity in both adults and children and also in the ag…
