  • Early State Economics

Henri Claessen, Henri J M Claessen et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Early State Economics•2017

This volume focuses on the political economy of early state societies and the ways in which the income of the central government of such systems was collected and spent. At the theoretical end of the spectrum, this book offers a general discussion of the concept of political economy; modes of production in antiquity; and an overview of early state organizational forms. With the data represented in this volume, such theoretical viewpoints are eval…

  • On The Invention of Hunter-Gatherers in Seventeenth Century Europe

    Open Access•Pieter Van De Velde•ARTICLE•Archaeological Dialogues•2002•References: 56

Although the title of Pluciennik's essay refers to hunter-gatherers, his description of the genealogy of that concept hardly mentions them in these terms; rather, seventeenth and eighteenth century European perceptions of non-peasant pursuits and primitive societies are discussed. Certainly, the labels themselves are unimportant, it is their meaning that matters, in this case the Image of the Other. Pluciennik avoids the noble savage strand of Eu…

  • An Extensive Alternative to Intensive Survey

Pieter Van De Velde•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2001•Cited by: 8

Intensive surveying is restricted to limited areas. As it is a line-walking method, there is a smearing effect on the results from averaging over larger stretches of land, compounded by archaeological visibility problems, the definition of diagnostics and walkers idiosyncrasies. Numerical correction cannot produce qualitative differentiation, however, and thus reliability (replicability) of the results is compromised. The present paper discusses …

  • Early State Dynamics

Pieter Van De Velde, Henri J M Claessen•BOOK•Early State Dynamics•1987

This book is about the dynamics of the Early State. It is based on new theoretical insights into the evolution of socio-political organizations and on a number of carefully selected case studies. The dynamic aspects of the Early State considered here are the changes and transformations that occur in the socio-political organization once the Early State has come into existence.

  • Private Politics

  • Evolutionary Epistemology and Human Values [and Comments and Reply]

Ronald Cohen, Attila Ágh et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1981•Cited by: 8

The theory of evolution is a body of concepts and relations that applies to social and cultural phenomena as well as to biological ones. The fundamental ideas of the theory-taxonomy, developmental relations, processes of change, and directionality-are shown to apply to human society and culture. Next it is argued that an evolutionary approach implies that the tension between "value-free" and value-biased research is essential to adaptation. Final…

  • The Social Anthropology of a Neolithic Cemetery in the Netherlands [and Comments and Reply]

Pieter Van De Velde, Charles A Bishop et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1979•Cited by: 18•References: 5

For the elucidation of a specific prehistoric social structure, general evolutionary theory has been found inadequate, probably because of its conjectural nature regarding the past, with but few instances tested, and its being worded in social anthropological terms, which are quite different from directly observable archaeological categories. Regarding the latter aspect, it is unnecessary to argue that because of the identity of their subject, hu…
