  • Measurements of calcium and phosphorus concentrations in the neonatal dentine of Weddell and crabeater seals using energy-dispersive x-ray analysis

    Open Access•E Cruwys, K Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1997•References: 3

Concentrations of calcium and phosphorus were measured in the neonatal dentine of 11 crabeater and 11 Weddell seal postcanine teeth with an energy-dispersive x-ray analyser. The extent of variation in elemental concentrations in different parts of the tooth, differences between species and individuals, and whether variation in elemental concentrations can provide information about dentine deposition mechanisms were assessed. No consistent pattern…

  • A comparative review of condylobasal lengths and other craniometric characters in 30 species of pinniped

    Open Access•E Cruwys, A E Friday•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1995

The condylobasal length (CBL) of skulls from 999 sexually mature seal, sealion, and fur seals of 30 different species was measured. Additional data gathered from previous studies were also included to give an indication of variation within each species, particularly where there is a wide geographical dispersion. Where possible, means and ranges of CBL were given separately for each sex, so that the degree of sexual dimorphism could be assessed. P…

  • Aerial survey of walrus haul-out sites in west Spitsbergen and Moffen

    Open Access•E Cruwys, Dan Weinstein•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 8

In July 1992 two aerial surveys were conducted to assess the size of the walrus ( Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus ) population at haul-out sites reported on the northwest coast of Spitsbergen and on Moffen. Walrus have been extensively hunted in Svalbard during the past 350 years, and in 1952 concern about decreasing stocks caused the Norwegian government to pass a law protecting the animals from hunting. At the time of the survey, it is likely that t…

  • The cultural impact of Aids in the circumpolar north

    Open Access•E Cruwys, Mark Nuttall•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1992

One of the most pressing contemporary concerns regarding the future health of northern communities is the spread of AIDS. Unlike Europe, the United States, and Africa, the introduction of HIV and AIDS in circumpolar regions is relatively recent. The first HIV-positive cases were diagnosed in Greenland in 1984, and, so far, there have been three deaths from AIDS -related diseases in Greenland, and several cases of AIDS in indigenous populations in…

  • Profile

    Open Access•E Cruwys•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1990

Knud Rasmussen (1879–1933), born in Greenland of Danish-Inuit stock, spent his childhood in Greenland. After schooling in Denmark he returned to Greenland for expeditions to the Inuit of the northeast, establishing by his late twenties a reputation as explorer and ethnographer. He undertook seven major expeditions to the Arctic, collecting ethnographic, archaeological, meteorological, geological, zoological and botanic data. His longest and best-…

  • Morphological variation and wear in teeth of Canadian and Greenland Inuit

    Open Access•E Cruwys•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1988•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Dental models of 649 Canadian Inuit from Hall Beach and Igloolik, and both models and skull dentitions of 782 Greenland Inuit (323 from the east coast, 459 from the west coast), were examined for (a) presence or absence of four specific morphological variants considered by various authors to indicate racial affinities (shovel-shaped incisors, cusp of Carabelli, Eskimo tubercle and protostylid on molars and premolars), and (b) amount of wear. Dent…
