The WHAC-A-Mole game
Using a unique private dataset from one of the largest consumer litigation financing firms in the U.S., we are the first to explore the impact of states’ regulatory activity (statutory or judicial) on funders’ behavior and consumers’ welfare. Our comprehensive dataset includes data on over 105,000 third-party funding agreements from 2000 throughout 2020 and data we compiled ourselves from court decisions, state legislation, and regulatory actions…
Winner pays
Many meritorious claims do not reach the courts due to the prohibitive costs that are associated with access to justice. While third-party funding, through nonrecourse loans, is often available, the market cannot help all claims. For instance, where the claim lacks clear monetary value (e.g., an injunction), or has little monetary value, market-based funding seems futile. Inspired by the third-party funding industry, we suggest public, nonrecours…
Wedding Crashers
The question of the relation between wrongful discrimination and the freedom of conscience and religion has been the subject of many debates over the past decade and has occupied both courts and the public. The most well-known legal case in that regard is likely Masterpiece Cakeshop , in which a Colorado bakery owner refused to bake a wedding cake for a homosexual couple and was sued for violating the State’s Anti-Discrimination law. Recently, th…

Preparation and use of varied natural tools for extractive foraging by bonobos ( Pan Paniscus )
OBJECTIVES: The tool-assisted extractive foraging capabilities of captive (zoo) and semi-captive (sanctuary) bonobo (Pan paniscus) groups were compared to each other and to those known in wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) cultures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bonobos were provided with natural raw materials and challenged with tasks not previously encountered, in experimental settings simulating natural contexts where resources requiring special r…

Adam and Eve have the same record yet receive different punishments. Adam receives the punishment that they both deserve, whereas Eve receives a more lenient punishment. In this article, we explore whether a deserved-but-unequal punishment, such as what Adam receives, can be just. We do this by explicating the conceptions of retributive justice that underlie both sides of the debate. We argue that inequality in punishment is disturbing mainly bec…
Ein Qedem 2. A Kebaran site in Nahal Galim, Mount Carmel, Israel
Ein Qedem 2 (EQ2) is an open-air Kebaran site (Early Epipalaeolithic period, ca. 22 000 –17 500 calBP) located on the slope of Mount Carmel, Israel. The site is a part of a complex of prehistoric sites situated around the perennial spring of Ein Qedem and near the outskirts of the city of Haifa. EQ2, located near affluent sources of flint, presents ample evidence for Kebaran flint knapping. The rich flint assemblage provides valuable information …
Short Paper
Reevaluation of geological and archaeological evidence from western Mount Carmel constrains its maximal tectonic uplift since the Middle Pleistocene. Tabun Cave, presently 45 m above sea level (asl), revealed human occupation from about 600 ka to 90 ka before present. The 25 m thick archaeological strata at Tabun are composed of laminated fine sand, silt and clays. Moreover, no marine deposits were found in Tabun or nearby caves. Since sea level …

New AMS 14 C Dates from The Early Upper Paleolithic Sequence of Raqefet Cave, Mount Carmel, Israel
Raqefet Cave (35 degrees 04'21"N, 32 degrees 39'17"W) is situated in the southeastern side of Mount Carmel in Israel (Figure 1) on the left bank of wadi Raqefet (230 m asl), ~50 m above the wadi bed. It is 50 m long with an area of ~500 m2 (Figure 2). Eric Higgs of Cambridge University and Tamar Noy of the Israel Museum conducted excavations at the site between 1970 and 1972 (Higgs et al. 1975). New excavations at the cave began in 2004 (Lengyel …

New data on the Geology and Geochronology of the Lower Palaeolithic Site Bizat Ruhama in the Southern Levant
The Bizat Ruhama site in the Northern Negev, Israel, has been first excavated in 1996. But geological observation of this site section began in 1995. The results obtained by geological and geophysical methods are discussed in this paper. New paleoma- gnetic data permit to date the cultural layer at Bizat Ruhama at the Matuyama epoch (0,85-0,99 My). Artifacts that belong to the Matuyama epoch differ from the others by their small sizes

Red Ochre and Human Evolution
This paper evaluates red ochre phenomena as a fossil indicator for developments of human capacities and red color choice in cultures. The archaeological record reveals that, from Early Palaeolithic to historical times, the collectors and users of red ochre have always been a distinctive minority (probable exceptions being the Magdalenian and Paleo-Indian peoples). Nevertheless, red ochre practices have persisted till the present, and the patterns…

A prehistoric site near the Mediterranean coast N of Acco. Kibbutz Evron is on a sandstone ridge formed by the accumulation of alternating layers of sand and reddish loams. A few of the soils in the vicinity of Evron contain cultural remains of the Early Paleolithic. These sites, or find-spots, are
The Faunal Remains from Evron Quarry in Relation to Other Lower Paleolithic Hominid Sites in the Southern Levant
The mammalian assemblage and archaeological finds from the Lower Palaeolithic hominid site of Evron Quarry, situated on the northern coastal plain of Israel, are described and discussed. In their lithic and faunal composition, the sites of Latamne (QfIII) (Latamne Formation, Orontes, Syria) and Sitt Markho (Nahr elKebir, Syria) resemble Evron and are probably contemporaneous. It is suggested here, based on their lithic and faunal composition, tha…
