The Late Mesolithic juveniles of Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov, Russia
Juveniles remain a largely underexplored socio-biological category in Mesolithic mortuary research, despite their potential to shed light on social values and community dynamics. The burial site at Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (YOO), Karelia, Russia, the largest known Mesolithic burial site in Northeastern Europe, provides a unique opportunity to explore the mortuary treatment of children and adolescents. This study uses osteoarchaeological methods in a…
An Early Metal Age Burial in Treugolnaya Cave, Primorye
The article outlines the findings of a multidisciplinary study of an Early Metal Age burial of a woman in Treugolnaya Cave, Primorye—the first such burial in the region. The human skeleton was accompanied by funerary goods including stone and bone artifacts and ceramics. The most noteworthy specimen among the lithics is a polished knife, very similar to those from the late 2nd to early 1st millennia BC sites in Primorye. DNA analysis showed that …
An Early Metal Age Burial in Treugolnaya Cave, Primorye
An Upper Second Molar from Akhshtyrskaya Cave and Population Affinities of the Middle Paleolithic Hominins of the Caucasus
On the “Two Layers” Hypothesis of Human Dispersal in East Eurasia
The study is focused on testing how the “two layers” hypothesis of human dispersal in East Asia corresponds to currently available data on ancient hunter-gatherer populations from Siberia and the Far East. To do this, metric data on 119 satisfactorily preserved male skulls from Siberia and the Japanese archipelago were analyzed using canonical variate analysis and the k-means clustering algorithm. The analysis demonstrates that several Neolithic …
Analysis of Permanent Molars Lateral Enamel and Dentin Proportions for Determination of the Taxonomic Status of Isolated Dental Remains
The article is focused on methodological problems related to determination of the taxonomic status of isolated dental remains using proportions of the lateral (non-occlusal) enamel and dentin of permanent upper and lower molars. The issue of taxonomic significance of thickness and volume of enamel and dentin remains debatable. It was suggested that their dynamics is influenced by homoplasy, when similar morphotypes can develop convergently. In th…
An Upper Second Molar from Akhshtyrskaya Cave and Population Affinities of the Middle Paleolithic Hominins of the Caucasus
The Akhshtyrskaya cave site in northwestern Caucasus dates mostly to the Middle Paleolithic. In 1961, during the analysis of faunal assemblage from layer 3a, a permanent upper second molar of Homo (AKH 1) was discovered. Initially, it was attributed to fossil Homo sapiens. Here, we present new findings related to this specimen, specifically to its external and internal morphology, amount of enamel and dentine in the lateral part of its crown, and…
Mobility and community at Mesolithic Lake Onega, Karelia, north-west Russia
This study investigates the underlying mechanisms driving the formation of the largest known burial site of the Northern European Mesolithic, Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (YOO). Radiogenic strontium isotope analysis (87Sr/86Sr) was used to identify group dynamics within the cemetery and examine the site's place within local and supra-regional networks. The analysis of 57 humans and 31 animals was supported by the creation of an environmental baseline wh…
The Sakhalin Ainu
The study is focused on recent population history of the Sakhalin Ainu people, which remains rebated over the last 70 years. Albeit it is generally accepted that the Sakhalin Ainu are decedents of Ainu migrants from Hokkaido, significant cranial differences has been revealed between these two related populations. Thus, while M. Levin ar-gued in favor of the Nivkh component in the Sakhalin Ainu population, A. Kozintsev, based on the analysis of cr…

On the Issue of Population Affinities of Some Ancient and Modern Groups from Fennoscandia, Eastern and Western Siberia
This study was triggered by the results of previous anthropological and genetic studies. Earlier we demonstrated the existence of close biological affinities of the people from Bolshoi Olenyi Ostrov (BOO) with both the ancient Western Siberian populations and people of the Ymyyakhtakh culture. At the same time, the results of the analysis of genetic markers reveal presence of the strong Nganasan-like component in genetic structure of the BOO samp…
Differentiating Potential of “Archaic Traits” on Permanent Upper Second Molars
To reveal the extent of introgression of archaic features into the modern human’s dentition, we analyzed the distribution of nine dental non-metric features on permanent upper second molars of the pre-sapient population of Eurasia. Previously, it was argued that five of these traits, which are usually attributed to the so-called “archaic markers” (epicrista, posterior fovea, crista obliqua, trapezoid crown shape, additional odontoglyphic elements…
A Case of Surgical Treatment of Lower Molars in a Mesolithic Sample from a Cemetery on the Yuzhny Oleniy Ostrov, Karelia, Russia
Here, we present the earliest case of surgical treatment of mandibular permanent molars known in Northern Eurasia. It concerns an aged woman buried at a Mesolithic cemetery on the Yuzhny Oleniy Ostrov (Island) in Lake Onega, southern Karelia, 8250–8050 cal BP. Our objective was to reconstruct the technology of surgical intervention, and to diagnose and describe the underlying condition. To do this, we carried out an examination of teeth and bone …

Size does matter
Dental data are one of the most important sources of information on the evolution of ancient hominids. It preserves information about both the early stages of ontogenesis and the postnatal period of life. It is generally accepted that one of the main evolutionary trend within the genus Homo over the past two million years was reduction of teeth size. This trend substantially accelerated in modern Homo sapiens during the Upper Paleolithic and Neol…

Deciduous Human Teeth From the Upper Paleolithic Site of Yudinovo, Western Russia
Population affinities of the Timonovka-Yudinovo Upper Paleolithic people are reconstructed on the basis of three isolated deciduous teeth––a lower lateral incisor, lower and upper second molars, likely representing three individuals––from Yudinovo in the middle Desna basin (15–12 ka BP), found in 1987–1996. Based on measurements and descriptive traits and computed microtomography, the teeth were compared with those from other Upper Paleolithic si…
Early Metal Age crania from Bolshoy Oleniy Island, Barents Sea
A new cranial series from the Early Metal Age burial ground on Bolshoy Oleniy (Great Reindeer) Island in Kola Bay of the Barents Sea is described. So far, this is the only series from the Arctic regions of Europe and the Urals. A multivariate analysis of cranial measurements in 27 prehistoric populations of Northern Eurasia has revealed the specificity of this group. Its most distinct affinities are with populations of Western Siberia and the Alt…
On the Origin of the Ryukyu Islanders
To test various hypotheses concerning the origin of the Ryukyu Islanders, data on two systems of traits – craniometric and cranial non-metric – were integrated using multivariate statistical methods. The results indicate that the Ryukyuans are a hybrid group which formed from at least three components. The first two, associated with the Jomon and Yayoi cultures, are also ancestral for other modern Japanese groups. The specificity of Ryukyuans may…

Optimal Ancient DNA Yields from the Inner Ear Part of the Human Petrous Bone
The invention and development of next or second generation sequencing methods has resulted in a dramatic transformation of ancient DNA research and allowed shotgun sequencing of entire genomes from fossil specimens. However, although there are exceptions, most fossil specimens contain only low (~ 1% or less) percentages of endogenous DNA. The only skeletal element for which a systematically higher endogenous DNA content compared to other skeletal…
Population genomics of Bronze Age Eurasia
The Bronze Age of Eurasia (around 3000–1000 BC) was a period of major cultural changes. However, there is debate about whether these changes resulted from the circulation of ideas or from human migrations, potentially also facilitating the spread of languages and certain phenotypic traits. We investigated this by using new, improved methods to sequence low-coverage genomes from 101 ancient humans from across Eurasia. We show that the Bronze Age w…
Early Divergent Strains of Yersinia pestis in Eurasia 5,000 Years Ago
The bacteria Yersinia pestis is the etiological agent of plague and has caused human pandemics with millions of deaths in historic times. How and when it originated remains contentious. Here, we report the oldest direct evidence of Yersinia pestis identified by ancient DNA in human teeth from Asia and Europe dating from 2,800 to 5,000 years ago. By sequencing the genomes, we find that these ancient plague strains are basal to all known Yersinia p…
