  • Measuring and Visualizing Solar UV for a Wide Range of Atmospheric Conditions on Hawai’i Island

    Open Access•FORREST M MIMS, A J S McGonigle et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Hawai'i Island often receives extreme (UV Index ≥ 11) solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). While the UV Index (UVI) has been measured since 1997 at Hawai'i's high-altitude Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO), measurements where people live and recreate are rare. We measured UVI on the face of a rotating mannequin head with UVR sensors at its eyes, ears and cheeks while simultaneously measuring the UVI with a zenith-facing sensor at MLO and seven sites at o…

  • Vitamin D and Psoriasis Pathology in the Mediterranean Region, Valencia (Spain)

    Open Access•María Morales‐Suárez‐Varela, Paloma Reguera-Leal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

Vitamin D has important immunomodulatory effects on psoriasis in the Mediterranean region. To measure vitamin D intake in subjects with and without psoriasis, and to find an association with relevant clinical features, a case-control study was performed using cases (n = 50, 50% participation rate) clinically diagnosed with psoriasis and 200 healthy subjects (39.5% participation rate), leaving a final sample of 104 people. A survey was conducted u…

  • Meta-analysis of All-Cause Mortality According to Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D

Cedric F Garland, June Jiwon Kim et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 63

We examined the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and all-cause mortality. We searched biomedical databases for articles that assessed 2 or more categories of 25(OH)D from January 1, 1966, to January 15, 2013. We identified 32 studies and pooled the data. The hazard ratio for all-cause mortality comparing the lowest (0–9 nanograms per milliliter [ng/mL]) to the highest (> 30 ng/mL) category of 25(OH)D was 1.9 (95% confidenc…

  • Could ultraviolet B irradiance and vitamin D be associated with lower incidence rates of lung cancer

    S B Mohr, Cedric F Garland et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 24

BACKGROUND: This study examines whether insufficient ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiance, a marker of vitamin D inadequacy, might contribute to lung cancer incidence. METHODS: The association of latitude and UVB irradiance with age-adjusted incidence rates of lung cancer in 111 countries was investigated. Independent associations with UVB irradiance, cloud cover, anthropogenic aerosols, and cigarette smoking, were assessed using multiple regression. R…

  • High Vitamin D and Calcium Requirements During Pregnancy and Tooth Loss

    William B Grant•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Russell et al.1 reported that tooth loss increased with increasing parity. Socioeconomic position, frequency of dental care visits, smoking, diabetes, age at most recent live birth, and length of time since most recent live birth were significant predictors of tooth loss. Nonetheless, the mechanisms of the association were found to remain undefined. A factor not considered, but which is likely to explain the association, is vitamin D. In the Thir…
