  • Reductionism in Cultural Ecology: The Amazon Case [and Comments and Reply]

Allen Johnson, Steve Brian Burkhalter et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1982•Cited by: 18

Cultural ecologists attempting to trace the influence of ecological scarcities on cultural development are often criticized for reductionism. In the Amazon case, critics of ecological theories have argued that resource scarcity is of minor importance as a determinant of cultural features because native communities appear to enjoy abundant land and fully nutritious diets. This paper presents data and arguments suggesting that much of this "resourc…

  • An application of cineradiography to the study of locomotion in primates

    Open Access•F K Jouffroy, Jean‐pierre Gasc et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•Cited by: 3•References: 4

The cineradiographic technique, whereby, at 64 frames/second, the successive positions of every bone segment of animals in motion can be accurately analyzed, was used to study the vertical leap of a Galago alleni from the ground position. This jump, 13 to 14 times the body length of the animal excluding the tail, is a record among primates challenged only by the tarsier. Such vertical leaps from the ground are a common mode of locomotion for the …
