  • From hooking up to staying in? Women negotiating appropriate sexuality in nightlife with age

    Open Access•K Vaadal•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2022

While much research has explored contemporary constructions of young women’s sexuality, few studies have been sensitive to how age influences women’s sexuality in the context of mainstream nightlife. Drawing on sexual scripting theory, I investigate how 19 Norwegian women (ages 27–34 years) draw on and negotiate cultural scripts when making sense of their nightlife experiences with age. I found that nightlife was an increasingly difficult space t…

  • It Feels Like Life Is Narrowing

    Open Access•K Vaadal, Ravn•ARTICLE•Sociology•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 42

  • Maturing out of ‘binge drinking’

    K Vaadal, Silje Louise Dahl•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2020•References: 22

Drinking style also plays a part in the construction of gender, and we explore how age and gender interact in young adult women’s accounts of maturing out of binge drinking practices. The analysis is based on qualitative interviews with 19 Norwegian wom…

    K Vaadal•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Mainstream nightlife has traditionally been a space marked by compulsory (hetero) sexuality and heteronormativity, making it a key arena for exploring gendered power relations and sexual harassment. In this paper, women’s experiences of unwanted attention in nightlife are explored to shed light on these gendered power relations in contemporary nightlife. The article is based on 50 in-depth qualitative interviews with Norwegian women aged 18–34 ye…
