  • Regional bombs and public labor obligations

    Open Access•Luu Duc Toan Huynh•ARTICLE•International Public Management…•2026

This study examines the long-term effects of wartime experiences on individual contributions to local public labor obligations, seen as a form of self-provision of public services. Analyzing data from one of the most intensive regional bombing campaigns in history during the Vietnam War and six national census waves, I identify a U-shaped pattern in the causal relationships using an instrumental variable (IV). These findings indicate that individ…

  • A land of sages: A legacy of former elites and university professors in Vietnam

Open Access•Luu Duc Toan Huynh, Kiet Tuan Duong•ARTICLE•Explorations in Economic History•2026•References: 33

Using a unique dataset of 3,022 elites from the Ly to Nguyen dynasties (1075–1919) and 1,324 recent associate (and full) professors (2021–2023), we find that regions with more historical elites have more modern professors. Using the distance to the school exam venue and the distance to the coastal areas as instrumental variables, we establish such a causal relationship. In addition, social capital benefits those from areas dense with historical e…

  • Addressing climate change with behavioral science: A global intervention tournament in 63 countries

    Open Access•Madalina Vlasceanu, Kimberly C Doell et al.•ARTICLE•Science Advances•2024

Effectively reducing climate change requires marked, global behavior change. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interve…

  • Public sentiment towards economic sanctions in the Russia–Ukraine war

Open Access•Vu Minh Ngo, Luu Duc Toan Huynh et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2022•Cited by: 6

This paper introduces novel data on public sentiment towards economic sanctions based on nearly 1 million social media posts in 108 countries during the Russia–Ukraine war by using machine learning. We show the geographical heterogeneity between government stances and public sentiment. Finally, we show how political regimes, trading relationships and political instability can predict how people perceive this war

  • What Vietnam’s localized lockdown policy showed: It did not work and was too late

    Open Access•Luu Duc Toan Huynh•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Vietnam was previously lauded as a model for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and it imposed localized lockdowns to deal with the emergence of deadly new variants. Here, daily data from 63 Vietnamese provinces for the period January–July 2021 (i.e., before vaccinations became available) are collected, and a panel event study is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the localized lockdown policy. The number of infected cases is found to increas…
