  • Risk of digital exposure for children's comprehension and integration of multiple digital documents

Open Access•Eliane Segers, Aurora Troncoso‐ruiz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Reading•2025

Background Children nowadays have to read and understand multiple digital documents while living in the current digital society. We examined the relation between digital exposure and multiple digital document reading outcomes in 203 5th graders (age, M = 10.33 years). Methods At the beginning of 5th grade, we assessed their working memory, sustained attention, decoding, vocabulary and digital exposure. At the end of 5th grade, children performed …

  • What do they say? Assessment of oral reading fluency in early primary school children

Open Access•Max van der Velde, Bo Molenaar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Recent studies have shown concern regarding an increased risk of functional illiteracy. A way to reverse this trend concerns focusing on improving reading fluency assessment. However, reading fluency assessment, which concerns quick, accurate and expressive reading, knows many shortcomings. To learn how to overcome these shortcomings, we conducted a scoping review. This review included primary and grey literature regarding the assessment and defi…

  • Understanding variation in children's reading comprehension

  • Comparability of Feedback in Pisa 2015 across Culturally Diverse Countries

Open Access•Jitske de Vries, Remco Feskens et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2022

The aim of this study was to investigate the comparability of feedback across culturally diverse countries by assessing the measurement invariance in PISA 2015 data. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis showed that the feedback scale implemented in PISA 2015 was not invariant across countries. The intercepts and residuals of the factor model were clearly not the same, and the factor loadings also differed. Model fit slightly improved when t…

  • Personalized and Automated Feedback in Summative Assessment Using Recommender Systems

Open Access•Eva de Schipper, Remco Feskens et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2021

In this study we explore the use of recommender systems as a means of providing automated and personalized feedback to students following summative assessment. The intended feedback is a personalized set of test questions ( items ) for each student that they could benefit from practicing with. Recommended items can be beneficial for students as they can support their learning process by targeting specific gaps in their knowledge, especially when …

  • Assessing children’s incremental word knowledge in the upper primary grades

Open Access•Iris Monster, Agnes Tellings et al.•ARTICLE•Language Testing•2021

Word knowledge acquisition is an incremental process that relies on exposure. As a result, word knowledge can broadly range from recognizing the word’s lexical status, to knowing its meaning in context, and to knowing its meaning independent of context. The present study aimed to model incremental word knowledge in 1454 upper primary school children from grades 3 to 5 by investigating their abilities on three word knowledge tasks originating from…
