Daniel 1-6 in Classical Islamic Culture and the Gospel According to Ibn Hishām
This article assesses the importance of the biblical book of Daniel in the first four Islamic centuries, focusing in particular on the legendary materials contained in Daniel 1-6. The article is divided into three sections. In the first section the treatments of Daniel 1-6 in Isrāʾīliyyāt works are examined, and it is shown that summaries of Daniel 1-6 in these works display evidence of oral transmission. Additionally, it is shown that some autho…
On the Original Meaning of the Qurʾanic Term al-shayṭān al-rajīm
This article seeks to reconsider the meaning(s) of the phrase al-shayṭān al-rajīm. It surveys the controversy surrounding the meaning of rajīm in this context and argues two points: first, that by the time the phrase was employed in the Qurʾan its original meaning had been forgotten, and second, that the original meaning of the term was related to Satan's role as a heavenly accuser
Q 30: 2‒5 In Near Eastern Context
This article aims to contextualize a short Qurʾānic passage – Q 30:2‒5 – with reference to Jewish and Christian materials that have not hitherto been deployed for this purpose. The article builds on the findings of recent scholarship, which reads this passage eschatologically rather than historically, and argues that there are, in fact, two texts that require contextualization: 1) The Qurʾānic verses themselves (which refer only to the fate of “t…
Veiling Esther, Unveiling Her Story
This book examines the ways in which the biblical book of Esther was read, understood, and used in Muslim lands, from ancient to modern times. It zeroes-in on a selection of case studies, covering works from various periods and regions of the Muslim world, including the Qur’an, premodern historical chronicles and literary works, the writings of a nineteenth-century Shia feminist, a twentieth-century Iranian dictionary, and others. These case stud…
Haman in the Qur’ān: The Reception of a Biblical Book in Islamic Lands
This chapter asks whether the “Haman” who appears six times in the Qur’an is the same “Haman” who appears in Esther as the story’s villain. As the Qur’an’s Haman collaborates with Pharaoh in Egypt, the means by which this character was translated from ancient Persia (where Esther is set) to ancient Egypt are analysed. Moreover, the surprising significance of this topic for interfaith debates, from medieval to modern times, is highlighted. In trac…

From Markets to Marvels: Jews on the Maritime route to China ca. 850–ca. 950 CE
In this article it is argued that Jewish travellers to China between 850 and 950 CE contributed to—and were the products of—a Judeo-Islamic culture, both in their mercantile activity and in the literary output that it spawned. It is argued that events in the Near East and in China in the late 9th and early 10th centuries had an irreversible effect on trade relations between the Near East (from which most Jewish traders of the time emanated) and C…
The Book of Esther and the Enūma Elish
This article is concerned with the influence of Mesopotamian myths on the Old Testament Book of Esther, with particular reference to the role of the Enūma Elish. The Book of Esther has been the subject of numerous studies, some of which have asked the questions posed in this article. Although full account is taken of these important studies, the present article contends that previous scholars have misguidedly focused their attention on Ishtar-leg…
Ornate manuals or practical adab? Some reflections on a unique work by an anonymous author of the 10th century CE
Este artículo estudia conceptos claves que se encuentran, por un lado, en el Adab y por otro en las prácticas administrativas abbasíes a partir de una obra inédita que versa sobre ambas cuestiones. Muestra la dificultad de aislar y de colocar en categorías diferentes las obras de Adab y las dedicadas a la burocracia, ya que ambos géneros eran susceptibles de una coloratura tanto ornamental como estrictamente práctica. Aunque el artículo adopta un…
