The Cyrus Cylinder in Biblical Scholarship
This article outlines and evaluates the scholarly interaction with the Cyrus Cylinder. It argues that, due to significant differences in terms of content and focus, it is unlikely that the Cyrus Cylinder as a text has yielded any form of direct influence upon the biblical material. Whereas the Cyrus Cylinder emphasises how Cyrus restores the Babylonian deities to their rightful place in Babylon, the edicts in Ezra stress the return of the exiles …

Jonah in 20th Century Literature
The biblical book of Jonah has been the subject of multiple literary retellings, ranging from individual poems to whole novels and theatrical dramas. This article focuses on interaction with the book of Jonah in 20th-century world literature, where Jonah becomes our alter ego; he embodies our own struggles with God. I shall highlight three common tropes in the retellings: (1) Several retellings use the character of Jonah to express a person's fai…

To Read - Or Not to Read - Ezekiel as Christian Scripture
This article focuses on the difficulty today to read the book of Ezekiel canonically. In Ezekiel, God’s destruction of Jerusalem is vindicated by the people’s utter sinfulness. Many earlier Christian readings of Ezekiel have tended to focus on how, through Jesus, human sin is finally conquered. I contend that such a reading does injustice to the message of the book of Ezekiel as a whole, as it enables the readers to quickly dismiss the horror of …
For the Comfort of Zion
This monograph seeks to identity the target audience of Isaiah 40-55. In doing so, it challenges the widespread view that Isaiah 40-55, in whole or in part, aims at and also reflects the concerns of the exilic community in Babylon
Abraham – A Judahite Prerogative
This article discusses the references to Abraham in the literature of the sixth century BC (Ez 11,15; 33,23; Isa 41,8; 51,2; 63,16 and Neh 9). First, it addresses the inter-textual relation between the references to Abraham in Ezekiel and in Isaiah 40–55: while the earlier Ezekielian material rejects the Judahites' claim to land through the promise to Abraham, the later Isaianic material, addressing a Judahite audience, affirms it. Secondly, it e…
