  • The Falklands Factor: Sour Grapes and Cold Fury in Anglo-Irish Relations with Implications for the Northern Ireland Conflict

    Open Access•Michael Kerr•ARTICLE•The International History Review•2026

This article examines the misunderstood role of the Falklands War in reshaping Anglo-Irish relations at a critical moment in the early 1980s. Rather than setting Anglo-Irish relations on a new trajectory, it argues that the crisis consolidated and deepened divisions that had emerged during the 1980–81 hunger strikes, closing the pathway towards an intergovernmental settlement of the Northern Ireland conflict. It shows how Haughey’s Falklands-era …

The contributor…

  • A Positive Aspect to the Tragedy of Lebanon: The Convergence of US, Syrian and Israeli Interests at the Outset of Lebanon's Civil War

    Michael Kerr•ARTICLE•Israel Affairs•2009•Cited by: 1

This article examines how US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger came to view a 'Syrian solution' to the war for Lebanon as a price worth paying for limiting Soviet influence in the Middle East and drawing Syrian President Hafez al-Asad into an Arab-Israeli peace process, which bolstered Egypt's relations with the US at a time when both Israel and Syria were acting in concert to break the PLO's power base in Lebanon. On the surface, civil war in L…
