Open Access•Shanon Shah, Jane Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Conflict and Terrorism•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This article investigates the esoteric beliefs of the Order of Nine Angles (ONA) as one way of making sense of its politics. By analyzing the ONA’s primary texts and archival data from the Information Network Focus on Religious Movements (Inform) we propose that, based on some recurring themes in the way the ONA is presented, it can be analyzed usefully as a new religious movement (NRM) with millenarian tendencies. • Ziauddin Sardar’s Biographical Writings as Models of Muslim Intellectual Work

    Shanon Shah•ARTICLE•World Futures•2022

What counts as “proper” intellectual work in the study of Islam? This article argues that Ziauddin Sardar’s autobiographical works are not only examples of “life writing”—they are valuable resources for the study of contemporary Islam. They give concrete context for Sardar’s contributions at the intersections of academic scholarship, journalism, and activism. By reflexively “showing his workings” as a public intellectual, they also provide mentor…

  • Constructing an alternative pedagogy of Islam: The experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Muslims

Shanon Shah•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2016

There is growing media interest in how lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) Muslims negotiate their seemingly incompatible religious and sexual identities. Thus, there is a need to investigate how some LGBT Muslims utilise Islam as a resource for alternative pedagogical strategies to reconcile their personal beliefs and values. Their strategies are especially significant given the prevalence of dominant Islamic teachings that forbid or co…
