  • Oliver Cromwell is a Devil!’ Religious Radicalism and Political Turmoil in Geneva during the English Civil Wars

    Nicholas A Cummings•ARTICLE•The Seventeenth Century•2024•References: 14

When King Charles I was beheaded in 1649 it incited a series of events in the Reformed city of Geneva. The Civil Wars and Regicide uncovered the political and religious tensions within Geneva during the English Civil Wars. In Geneva, two important bodies, the Small Council of civil magistrates and the Company of Pastors jockeyed for an appropriate response from their diverse members. Additionally, the leaders of Geneva had to respond to English a…

  • Luther vs. the Lutherans (and Catholics): The Reception and Authority of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon in Francis Turretin’s (1623–1687) Institutio Theologiae Elencticae

    Nicholas A Cummings•ARTICLE•Church History and Religious…•2023

This article examines the reception and authority of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon in Francis Turretin’s (1623–1687) Institutio Theologiae Elencticae (1679–1685). Scholarship on the reception of the Reformers in seventeenth-century Calvinism has continued to grow and I argue that Turretin utilized both Luther and Melanchthon in fluid and diverse ways. In particular, Luther and Melanchthon, alongside being authorities against Roman Catholic…

He was particularly adept at taking raw health care data that the government had assembled with no apparent interpretation and translating it so that its meaning and implications for health care practice were clear. He strongly believed…

  • Was the Death of Clinical Romanticism by Murder, Suicide, or Natural Causes? The Standardization View

    Open Access•Nicholas A Cummings•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1999•References: 7

Psychotherapy guidelines, which include manuals and protocols, are proliferating rapidly and are threatening to obliterate that part of therapy that is humanistic. Unfortunately, both those advocating the standardization of treatment and those lamenting the decline in psychology of clinical romanticism take the position that these are mutually exclusive and inherently antagonistic views. To the contrary, these are complementary, and both are need…
