  • Religious Conversion as a Form of Religious Contact: Special Issue Introduction

    Open Access•Tova Makhani-Belkin, Minoo Mirshahvalad et al.•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2024

Religious conversion is a phenomenon that has intrigued scholars, theologians, and sociologists for centuries. As the conscious choice of a particular form of religion over another, it is eminently a form of religious contact. Religious conversion may be approached psychologically, sociologically, and conceptually. The contributions of this special issue show all three approaches and cover a wide array of geographical, social, and religious conte…

  • Religious Conversion as Religious Contact—the “statement conversion”: John Henry Newman and Malcolm X

    Open Access•Sebastian Rimestad•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2024

Some famous religious conversions, happening in a great variety of contexts, are carried out by intellectuals who use their conversion to make a statement about the world. Arguably, all conversions to some extent make a statement about the world, but some more publicly than others. My contribution will compare the conversions from Anglicanism to the Roman Catholic Church during the Oxford Movement in the 1840s with those of African Americans to (…

  • Spreading the Catholic Faith in the Periphery. Jesuit Mission in Polish Livonia (1625–1772)

    Open Access•Sebastian Rimestad•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2023

The region of Latgale/Polish Livonia lies on the intersection between the Lutheran northern half of the Baltic region and the Roman Catholic southern part. Almost all of the local German nobility had accepted Lutheranism, but the region was politically a part of the Roman Catholic Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and Jesuit missionaries tried to re-Catholicise this region. The religious contact between the Catholic missionaries and the surrounding…

  • Hegemonic Confessions at the Baltic Periphery—Religious Contact in the Early Modern Baltic Region

    Open Access•Sebastian Rimestad, Knut Martin Stünkel•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2023•References: 1

The Baltic region has always been situated on the crossroads of the three main branches of Christianity: Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Protestantism. As such, it has provided ample material for studying religious contact. This special issue brings together four contributions analysing such cases in this region during the early modern period. It shows the value of the Baltic region as a multi-ethnic melting pot of different Christian denominations, h…

  • The Pan-Orthodox Council of 2016 – A New Era for the Orthodox Church?: Interdiscliplinary Perspectives

    Vasilios N Makrides, Sebastian Rimestad•BOOK•Pan-Orthodox Council of 2016 - a…•2021

The present volume, based on a related conference in Erfurt, offers interdisciplinary insights on the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church or the Pan-Orthodox Council, convened on the island of Crete in June 2016. Although some Orthodox Churches finally declined to participate – the most prominent being the Russian one –, the Council was a most significant development. It brought a considerable number of Orthodox Churches together and di…

  • Orthodox Christian Identity in Western Europe: Contesting Religious Authority

    Sebastian Rimestad•BOOK•Orthodox Christian Identity in…•2020

This book analyses the discourses of Orthodox Christianity in Western Europe to demonstrate the emerging discrepancies between the mother Church in the East and its newer Western congregations. Showing the genesis and development of these discourses over the twentieth century, it examines the challenges the Orthodox Church is facing in the modern world. Organised along four different discursive fields, the book uses these fields to analyse the Or…

  • The Russian Orthodox Church in Western Europe: One or many

    Sebastian Rimestad•ARTICLE•Religion State & Society•2015

This article analyses the way Russian Orthodox communities, primarily in Western Europe, cope with the ecclesiological challenge of de-territorialisation and increased individual mobility in the modern world. It focuses on the developments within the three parallel Russian Orthodox jurisdictions in Western Europe, especially since the fall of the Iron Curtain. These developments can primarily be summarised in the context of two dilemmas. First, t…

  • Modernising Church Life: The Case of the Interwar Orthodox Churches in Estonia and Latvia 1

    Sebastian Rimestad•ARTICLE•Religion State & Society•2012•References: 3

The minority Orthodox Churches of Estonia and Latvia in the period between the two World Wars attempted to overcome the perception that they were backward and Russian-friendly by modernising: by keeping up with changes in society at large. This happened primarily in three areas: the language of the liturgy, the style of the music and the church calendar. I analyse each of these areas with regard to the permissibility, the style and the means of t…
