  • The GeSCA repository

Open Access•Louisa Willoughby, Romie Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Linguistics•2024•References: 6

The Monash node of the LDaCA project has established the GeSCA repository for researchers to deposit multimodal video-based annotated corpora collected in Australia or the Asia Pacific region–both for sign languages and for spoken languages where multimodal features have been annotated. In this article we discuss three initial datasets augmented and deposited as part of this project which include the newly expanded Auslan Corpus of over 300 h of …

  • The role of emotion beliefs in depression, anxiety, and stress

    Open Access•T Johnston, Tylah E Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2024•References: 2

Objective: Beliefs about the controllability and usefulness of emotions may influence successful emotion regulation across multiple emotional disorders and could thus be influential mechanisms in long-term mental health outcomes. However, to date there has been little empirical work in this area. Our aim was to fill this gap, by examining the links between emotion beliefs and common emotional disorder symptoms. Specifically, we examined whether e…

  • Clause constituents, arguments and the question of grammatical relations in Auslan (Australian Sign Language)

    T Johnston•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2019

This study investigates clause constructions in Auslan. It looks at the alignment of constituent semantic role with constituent position and order in clauses, changes in the morphology of signs according to position and/or role, and the interpretation of omitted arguments. The aim is to determine if there are grammatical relations in Auslan. The most frequent constituent order parallels English, thus Auslan might be said to also instantiate a bas…

  • Towards a comparative semiotics of pointing actions in signed and spoken languages

    T Johnston•ARTICLE•Gesture•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 13

Co-speech pointing actions have been under-analysed or ignored in language description and linguistic theory and this has led to an over-interpretation of their role and status in signed languages as signs belonging to particular grammatical classes, such as pronouns, determiners, and locatives. I argue that the pointing signs found in signed languages are not fundamentally different from the pointing actions found in the composite utterances of …

  • Lexical Frequency in Sign Languages

    T Johnston•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2012

Measures of lexical frequency presuppose the existence of corpora, but true machine-readable corpora of sign languages (SLs) are only now being created. Lexical frequency ratings for SLs are needed because there has been a heavy reliance on the interpretation of results of psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic experiments in the SL research literature; yet, these experiments have been conducted without the benefit of such measures. In addition, me…

  • In One's Own Image

    T Johnston•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2005

The ethics of the use of genetic screening and reproductive technologies to select against and for deafness is presented. It is argued that insofar as deafness is a disability it is ethical to act in such a way as to avoid the conception or birth of children with genetic or congenital deafness. The discovery and recognition of signing deaf communities as cultural and linguistic communities (minorities) does not alter this basic ethical position, …

  • Nouns and Verbs in Australian Sign Language

    T Johnston•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2001

Results of the noun-verb pair comprehension and production tests from the Test Battery for Auslan Morphology and Syntax (Schembri et al., 2000) are re-presented, re-analyzed, and compared to data from two other cases also dealing with noun-verb pairs: the Auslan lexical database and a comparison of Auslan and American Sign Language (ASL) signs. The data elicited through the test battery and presented in this article confirm the existence of forma…

    T Johnston, T R St Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1921•Cited by: 1

suggestive '."And the lecturer told me afterwards that he felt that this was praise indeed.I have tried to work out answers to the natives' problems from the natives' point of view ; to put myself for a moment in their place, to think with their mind, and I feel that my long years of residence among them, in some degree, enables me to do this.To have to attack a native problem, shackled by the convention of our own way of thinking, is a great han…
