Founding and sustaining grassroots actions in superdiverse neighbourhoods facing socioeconomic challenges: Narratives of emergent processes, actions and resources
The study contributes new knowledge about civil society and non-profit action in superdiverse neighbourhoods that face socioeconomic challenges in England and Sweden. Locally based grassroot organisations are of special interest and demonstrate substantial voluntary altruism. Since little is known about the nature of civil society in these conditions, this paper addresses a gap in knowledge using material from interviews with founders and actors …
Who are the “People” and what does “Home” mean? A case of frame transformation and counter-framing of the “People’s Home” in the Sweden Democrat Rhetoric 1989–2022
Civil Society, Neighbourhood Diversity and Deprivation in UK and Sweden
This paper explores the relationship between neighbourhood level density of civil society organisations (CSOs), diversity, and deprivation. We compare the UK and Sweden, two countries with different civil society traditions and welfare state regimes. We use data on formal civil society organisations to examine whether diverse neighbourhoods have lower levels of civil society infrastructure. In the UK, contrary to what could be expected from Putna…
Nationalism and the Politics of Nostalgia 1
This article contributes to the analysis of the politics of nostalgia by focusing on its content, conditions, and mechanisms. Frame theory is used to understand the contested nature of nostalgia through the central framing of the past. We explore ways in which nostalgia relates to ethnic nationalism and populism and its close relationship to the rhetoric of the populist radical right. Components of nostalgia that stand out as particularly signifi…
Gate-keeping the nation: Discursive claims, counter-claims and racialized logics of whiteness
This article analyses the racialization of discourses about national identities, and explores the implications for populations racialized as white. Two extensive datasets have been brought together, spanning a decade and 560 interviews, to explore discursive interplay, the oppositional nature and relationality of majority and minority claims about national belonging. We demonstrate that national identity claims are constructed discursively from p…
Remainers are nostalgic too: An exploration of attitudes towards the past and Brexit preferences
Nostalgia had a prominent place in the Brexit Referendum campaign, epitomized by Nigel Farage carrying around with him an old-fashioned blue British passport on the campaign trail. In this paper, we seek to examine British attitudes towards the past through a new survey instrument administered online in July and August 2018 (N = 3,000). We empirically establish two dimensions of nostalgia that are differentially associated with political preferen…
Frames of nostalgia and belonging: The resurgence of ethno-nationalism in Sweden
This article explores the ethno-nationalist rhetoric promoted by radical right-wing parties in Europe; its perceived threats against national identity translated into a nostalgia for the past based on ethnic homogeneity. Five anti-immigrant frames have been especially instrumental in attracting voters, merging with other central components to construct a potent master frame and structuring much of the mobilizing activities of these parties. This …
Förändring och kontinuitet i det svenska politiska landskapet: Politisk-sociologiska perspektiv inför valet 2018
Change and continuity in the political landscape. Politico-sociological perspectives on the general election in Sweden 2018The political landscape in Sweden has undergone considerable changes in recent decades. The number of political parties in the Swedish parliament has increased from five to eight, and the socio-economic issues of the traditional political right–left scale has been challenged by socio-cultural issues relating to lifestyle and …
The changing political landscape of Sweden: Political cleavages, actors and processes
The political landscape in Sweden has undergone considerable changes in recent decades The number of political parties in the Swedish parliament has increased from five to eight, and the socio-economic issues of the traditional political right–left scale has been challenged by socio-cultural issues relating to lifestyle and identity. Notably, the notion of Swedish exceptionalism and the particularities of its welfare state is lingering despite fi…

National Days in Nation Building: Similarities and Differences
National days constitute a comparatively younger stratum of the nation. Whereas flags have been used to signal the presence of states and nations among other states and nations for some time, the nature of the national day is different as the in-group constitutes the focus for its celebrations, although ‘others’ and ‘enemies’ are much part of celebratory origins and establishment. National days enact institutionalized notions of sameness and onen…
The politics of recognition: Symbols, Nation Building and Rival Nationalisms
Ceremonial initiatives linked to nation‐building projects are highly visible in multiethnic states, where governments seem to have adopted a Durkheimian approach in which ceremonies contribute to the strengthening of communities. However, national ceremonies are not invented or exported to other nations easily, as seen when outlining the pattern of a successful national day. A unifying narrative (sometimes the historical genesis) is significant i…
Successful Nation-Building and Ceremonial Triumph: Constitution Day in Norway
This chapter will explore how national days can play a key role in the formation and the maintaining of nations. In this context, we turn to the Norwegian national day — Constitution Day on 17th May — a unique celebration in terms of ceremonial choreography and participation that has contributed to the building of the modern Norway. A recent poll determined that 78 per cent of the Norwegians participate in some celebrations on the national day (B…
