Associations Between Having a Spouse/Partner with Alcohol Problems and One’s Own Risk of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders by Sexual Orientation
Introduction The association between an individual’s alcohol misuse and their spouse’s/partner’s behavioral health is well documented. Whether these associations vary by sexual orientation is unknown. Methods We used data from the 2012–2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III; n = 36,309 U.S. adults ≥18 years). Using multivariable logistic regression models, we examined the associations between sexual orient…

Ethnic Discrimination, Sexual Orientation Discrimination, and DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder Among U.S. Latino or Hispanic Adults
We aimed to assess the probability of past-year DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (AUD) and past-year moderate-to-severe DSM-5 AUD as a function of past-year ethnic discrimination among U.S. Latino/Hispanic adults and as a function of past-year discrimination types among Latino/Hispanic sexual minorities (SM). We used data from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III ( n = 36,309 U.S. adults aged ≥18 years). O…

If we build it, will they come? Results of a quasi-experimental study assessing the impact of maternity waiting homes on facility-based childbirth and maternity care in Zambia
INTRODUCTION: Maternity waiting homes (MWHs) aim to increase access to maternity and emergency obstetric care by allowing women to stay near a health centre before delivery. An improved MWH model was developed with community input and included infrastructure, policies and linkages to health centres. We hypothesised this MWH model would increase health facility delivery among remote-living women in Zambia. METHODS: We conducted a quasi-experimenta…
Exploring change over time in community mobilization domains: Results from a maternity waiting home intervention in rural Zambia
Community mobilization interventions increase participation in communities to address health as a human right as called for in the 1978 Alma Ata Declaration. Grounded in empowerment, CM addresses socially prescribed power imbalances and health equity through a capacity building approach. These data reflect CM interventions function and have impact in different ways for different groups within the same community. Engaging directly with marginalize…

Moderate-to-Severe Tobacco Use Disorder and Discrimination Among U.S. Sexual Minority Older Adults
Greater cumulative discrimination based on ethnicity/race and sexual orientation was associated with increased risk for moderate-to-severe TUD among sexual minority adults aged ≥65 years. Our findings underscore the importance of age considerations in understanding the role of discrimination in the assessment and treatment of TUD
Operationalization of the Ecological Systems Theory to Guide the Study of Cultural Practices and Beliefs of Newborn Care in Rural Zambia
Introduction: A wide gap in knowledge exists about the factors associated with newborn care in rural Zambia. In this year of the nurse and midwife, the purpose of this article is to provide transcultural researchers with an example of how Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (EST) can be used to guide an exploration of the cultural practices, knowledge, and beliefs of newborn care and health-seeking behaviors in rural Zambia. Methodology: B…
Sexual Orientation, Tobacco Use, and Tobacco Cessation Treatment-Seeking: Results From a National U.S. Survey
Despite higher rates of tobacco use and smoking-related diseases among sexual minorities, tobacco cessation treatment-seeking behaviors (e.g., medication, nicotine replacement products) remain poorly understood across sexual orientation subgroups. This study examines tobacco cessation treatment-seeking behaviors associated with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition tobacco use disorder (TUD) across the three major sex…

Household saving during pregnancy and facility delivery in Zambia: A cross-sectional study
Financial barriers cause many women in low- and middle-income countries to deliver outside of a health facility, contributing to maternal and neonatal mortality. Savings accrued during pregnancy can increase access to safe delivery services. We investigated the relationship between household saving during pregnancy and facility delivery. A cross-section of 2381 women who delivered a child in the previous 12 months was sampled from 40 health facil…

Discrimination and mental health among lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults in the United States
Health disparities among sexual minority groups, particularly mental health disparities, are well-documented. Numerous studies have demonstrated heightened prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders among lesbian, gay, and bisexual groups as compared with heterosexuals. Some authors posit that these disparities are the result of the stress that prejudice and perceived discrimination can cause. The current study extends previous research by ex…

Trolley Dolly or Skilled Emotion Manager? Moving on from Hochschild's Managed Heart
This article examines emotion in organizations and the emotion management skills organizational actors possess. While Hochschild's (1983) seminal work on emotional labour is perhaps one of the greatest contributions to our understanding of emotion in organizations, this article challenges key tenets of Hochschild's thesis and goes on to offer an evolved analysis of emotional labour and alternative conceptualizations of organizational emotionality…

Relational Aggression at School: Associations with School Safety and Social Climate
Customer Violence and Employee Health and Safety
This paper seeks to extend current perspectives on occupational health and safety (OHS) by integrating 'emotional labour' into OHS debates. We focus on the growing incidence of customer violence in the airline and railway industries and how this intensifies the demands made on employees' emotional labour. We argue that, just as physical labour is considered in terms of volume and intensity, so should emotional labour. Moreover, we argue that high…

Empowerment and public policy: An exploration of the implications of Section 115 of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act
The ability of individuals to gain mastery over their environment is considered empowerment. However, empowerment often is assessed without attention to the historical, social, or political context the individual is embedded within. This context often is contingent upon social policies that enhance or limit the choices an individual has to behave in ways constructed as efficacious. One example of such a policy is Section 115 of the Personal Respo…

Smoking in College Women: The Role of Thinness Pressures, Media Exposure, and Critical Consciousness
There are strong social pressures for U.S. females, particularly those of European heritage, to achieve and maintain an extremely low body weight. These pressures are reflected in a variety of media sources, including advertising. We argue that valuing thinness, exposure to thinness-depicting media, and lacking skepticism about tobacco advertisements have adverse effects on young women's decisions about smoking, particularly smoking for weight co…
