Swimming, Masculinity and Cinema in Gilles Lellouche’s Le Grand Bain (2018)
Le Grand Bain, a feature film directed by Gilles Lellouche and released in 2008, was highly praised in the French press for its attempt to challenge traditional hegemonic masculinity. Its story follows eight middle-aged men in professional or emotional crisis who set themselves a challenge: to win the male synchronized swimming world championship. Through the humorous contrast between the male characters and a sport culturally reserved for girls,…

Analyzing 123 publications, the study categorizes the drivers of informality into institutional and policy, economic and poverty, political, and environmental domains. The fin…
Who Gets Vaccinated? Cognitive and Non‐Cognitive Predictors of Individual Behaviour in Pandemics
This study investigates different cognitive and non‐cognitive characteristics associated with individuals' willingness to get vaccinated against Covid‐19 and their actual vaccination status. Our empirical analysis is based on data obtained from three survey waves conducted in 2021 among about 2,000 individuals living in the German state of North Rhine‐Westphalia. We find that individuals with a high level of trait reactance – a personality charac…
Obesity And Cash Rewards
In a multi-phase randomized controlled trial, we examine the impacts of cash rewards of EUR 150 and EUR 300 for reducing body weight on the likelihood of weight loss and weight-related behavioral change among 700 obese individuals. We find effects during all experimental phases, including 18 months after exposure to the incentives. Additional monetary rewards of EUR 250 and EUR 500 provided to participants who had lost a substantial amount of bod…

In the Shoes of Dave Blase: Cycling, Cinema, and Social Class in Peter Yates’ Breaking Away
Peter Yates’ Breaking Away (1979) is a riveting example of sport biopic. Indeed, Yates’ film focuses on the story of Dave Blase, a Hoosier who competed in the Little 500 cycling race during his time at Indiana University. By completing 139 of the 200 laps by himself, the student brought the victory to his fraternity, the Phi Kappa Psi. Of course, if the film respects the location – the shooting was entirely conducted in Bloomington – it changes t…
Jim Thorpe – All American: A Thin Hollywood Line of Truth
Jim Thorpe – All American by Michael Curtiz (1951), with Burt Lancaster as main actor, is an interesting example of a sports biopic for all historians seeking both to build ties between reality and fiction, and decipher the construction and/or diffusion of certain collective representations. As such, it constitutes a ‘trace’ of time which contributes a posteriori to a ‘realization’. For the interest of the film lies less in the reconstitution or …

Paris in the 1920s: Hemingway’s city of sport
Hemingway’s representation of Paris in A Moveable Feast has enthralled many a reader. It steers clear of traditional description as the author prefers to ‘create’ the city rather than ‘describe’ it. The narrator presents streets, cafés and restaurants as familiar places, thus imparting greater immediacy to his sense of the city. It is the same for the sports venues he frequented and idealised. Indeed, Ernest Hemingway was an enthusiast of horse r…

The Economic Integration of Forced Migrants: Evidence for Post‐War Germany
The flight and expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe after World War II constitutes one of the largest forced population movements in history. We analyse the economic integration of these migrants and their offspring in West Germany. A quarter century after displacement, first‐generation migrants still tend to fare worse economically. Displaced agricultural workers, however, exhibit higher incomes than comparable natives, as displacement cause…

Real and Nominal Wage Rigidities and the Rate of Inflation: Evidence from West German Micro Data
This article examines real and nominal wage rigidities in West Germany. Using regionally disaggregated register data for 1975-2001, we estimate the extent of both types of wage rigidities from the observed distribution of individual wage changes, taking into account possible measurement error. The fraction of workers facing wage increases that are caused by nominal and particularly real wage rigidity is substantial. The extent of real rigidity ri…
Overtime Work and Overtime Compensation in Germany
Sharing the available stock of work more fairly is a popular concern in the public policy debate. One policy proposal is to reduce overtime work in order to allow the employment of more people. This paper suggests that such a concept faces major problems. Using Germany as a case study, it is shown that the group of workers with the highest risks of becoming unemployed, namely the unskilled, also exhibit low levels of overtime work. Those who work…

Wage Rigidity: Measurement, Causes and Consequences
Wage rigidity - the observation that wages cannot be adjusted downwards - has important implications for labour markets and macroeconomic performance. Empirical evidence on the extent, causes and consequences of wage rigidity on the individual level is relatively scant, however. This Feature presents articles that apply a new methodology to estimate the incidence and extent of nominal and real wage rigidity among the employed in three major Europ…

Dismissal Protection and Worker Flows in Small Establishments
Based on a large employer–employee matched data‐set, the paper investigates the effects of variable enforcement of German dismissal protection legislation on the employment dynamics in small establishments. Specifically, using a difference‐in‐differences approach, we study the effect of changes in the threshold scale exempting small establishments from dismissal protection provisions on worker flows. In contrast to the predictions of the theory, …
Portuguese Migrants in the German Labor Market: Selection and Performance
The labor market performance of Portuguese workers in Germany is analyzed in this article. While previous work has compared wages and characteristics of migrants to natives only, this study also matches the data set with an equivalent survey from the sending country. The findings show that Portuguese migrants as a whole are negatively selected, with the exception of blue-collar workers, the largest group among the movers. The finding that Portugu…
Network Migration of Ethnic Germans
This study has argued that network migration is central to actual migratory movements, which suggests that its determinants should be carefully investigated. The analysis demonstrates that the network behavior of ethnic Germans can be explained, to a large degree, by observable characteristics. Two crucial variables were investigated, namely the connections to friends from the country of origin and the settlement close to relatives and friends. E…

The Impact of Forced Migration on Mortality: Evidence From German Pension Insurance Records
We examine the long-run effects of forced migration for individuals who were displaced from Eastern Europe to Germany in the aftermath of World War II. Evidence suggests that displaced individuals were worse off economically, facing a considerably lower income and a higher unemployment risk than comparable nondisplaced Germans, even 20 years after being expelled. We extend this literature by investigating mortality outcomes. Using social security…
Pro-poor Tourism Development in Viengxay, Laos: Current State and Future Prospects
Since the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) first opened its doors to foreign tourists in the early 1990s, the number of tourists to the country has increased significantly. However, the Lao PDR remains one of the poorest countries in the world and tourism is seen by the Laotian government and by NGOs active in the country as a tool to alleviate poverty. Nonetheless, the Laotian government has until now lacked the financial means and kno…

When an energy drink exalts a table tennis hero: Brand placement and subvertising in the manga Ping-Pong Dash!! by Honda Shingo
While comic books have today become a commonplace subject of study that no longer requires justification, the issue of sports representation in the ninth art remains a relatively new one. In the case of a table tennis-themed manga, in particular, mirrored through the brand placement of an energy drink, Max Coffee, this paper studies the emerging mechanism which combines representation of a sports spectacle (table tennis) with the fictional constr…
Vél’ d’Hiv’ six-day race: The spirit of Paris during the twenties
The Vélodrome d’Hiver, known colloquially as ‘Vél’ d’Hiv’, was a major sports venue located in Paris, not far from the Eiffel Tower. Used for ice hockey, boxing, wrestling and other events, it was above all the scene of a famous cycling competition: the Six-Day Race. It enjoyed such success that it became a source of artistic inspiration, both in painting, literature and film. La Ronde infernale (Infernal Circle), a feature film released in Frenc…
Rugby, Modernity and Controversy: Le P'tit Parigot (1926) by René Le Somptier
ASBTRACTThe history of sports literature has enjoyed renewed interest over the last few years, with a noticeable increase in the number of Anglo-Saxon works and the revival of French research. Through fiction, it is possible to understand the processes whereby ideas spread and collective imaginaries are constructed. In this regard, this article revisits the history of rugby union through the prism of a cine-novel, Le P'tit Parigot (1926), which w…
Government motivations for hosting the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
As a major stake-holder, government plays an important role in mega events development. Studies on government's motivations for staging mega events are noticeably lacking and this paper attempts to address this gap by examining the Chinese governments' motivations for hosting the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Such a study can enhance our understanding of governments' events strategy and policies, as well as provide insights on mega event policy mak…

The Blinder–Oaxaca Decomposition for Nonlinear Regression Models
In this article, a general Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition for nonlinear models is derived, which allows the difference in an outcome variable between two groups to be decomposed into several components. We show how, using nldecompose, this general decomposition can be applied to different models with discrete and limited dependent variables. We further demonstrate how the standard errors of the estimated components can be calculated by using Stata'…
