Food, Control, and Resistance
In recent years a growing number of comparative histories have been written about the North American West and Australia, including Margaret D. Jacobs's prize-winning White Mother to a Dark Race: Settler Colonialism, Maternalism, and the Removal of Indigenous Children in the American West and Australia, 1880–1940 (2011) and portions of her A Generation Removed: The Fostering and Adoption of Indigenous Children in the Postwar World (2014), and Ann …
Territories of Empire
Many historians comfortably position American expansion across North America (and beyond) in the frameworks of manifest destiny and imperial ambitions. These provide familiar themes with which we can package and contextualize the Mexican-American War (1846–1848), the Mexican Cession (1848), the Gadsen Purchase (1853), the Spanish-American War (1898), and various activities in the Pacific and Caribbean. Andy Doolen's Territories of Empire offers a…

In the past few years the field of indigenous genocide studies in North America has grown dramatically, with various worthy titles having been published and a number of exciting contributions slated for publication. Moreover, the concept of genocide is being integrated itself into emerging scholarship such as Native America studies, settler colonial studies, and many other fields. This collection of essays provides some h…

The Sand Creek Phenomenon
This article explores various issues germane to the field of the history of the North American West and the struggle to integrate these issues into the broader field of genocide studies. The primary historiographic example of the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre of Cheyennes and Araphahos in southeastern Colorado by the Colorado Militia illustrates the difficulties of producing objective research on such morally charged historical events. Specific attent…
Pursuing Wicozani (the Good Way of Life)
Using focus group methodology, we examined the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota idea of wicozani (pronounced wee-cho'zah-nee), or "the good way of life", as it relates to individual and family life and assert its value in guiding functional adaptations. Additional theoretical scaffolding is drawn from Vygotsky's (1978) zone of proximal development within the framework of Hill's (1949) family stress model, reifying the effectiveness of wicozani to direc…
