  • Neanderthal Activity Through Fire During the Middle Pleistocene in Cova Negra (Xàtiva, Spain)

    Open Access•Isabela Oltra, M Mercè Bergadà et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2026

The micro-archaeological study of Neanderthal fires provides exceptional insight into the behavior and activities carried out by these populations. We present the micromorphological results of level VIII of Cova Negra (Xàtiva, Spain), which is attributed, based on its dates, to MIS 7. Large areas of combustion were recorded, featuring important accumulations of ash and rubefied surfaces, with very few charred residues and sparse archaeological ma…

  • Archaeological Lithotheques of Siliceous Rocks in Spain

    Open Access•David Ortega, A Arrizabalaga et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2025•References: 15

The use of lithotheques, libraries or collections of rocks is relatively recent in archaeological research in Spain. These collections have mostly been formed through isolated initiatives in different institutions, without any scientific strategy to guide their development and growth. The perspective in the last few years has changed substantially as these infrastructures are now regarded as a scientific resource of great interest and potential i…

  • Archaeological and Experimental Data from the Bipolar-on-Anvil Debitage in the Middle Paleolithic Site of Los Aljezares (Aspe, Alicante, Spain)

    Margarita Vadillo Conesa, A Eixea et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2024•References: 23

Bipolar debitage has been documented in different chronocultural and geographical contexts. In this paper, we analyze the implications of this type of exploitation in a Middle Paleolithic context where it has rarely been recognized. The observation of the archaeological materials is combined with a geological characterization, which has made it possible to determine the qualities and original morphology of the exploited volumes. These aspects are…

  • Geoarchaeological and microstratigraphic view of a Neanderthal settlement at Rambla de Ahíllas in Iberian Range

    Open Access•M Mercè Bergadà, A Eixea et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•References: 25

The Abrigo de la Quebrada is a Middle Palaeolithic rockshelter located in the Rambla de Ahíllas in the Iberian Range (Valencia, Spain). Archaeological work began in 2007 and was completed in 2015, reaching the rockshelter substratum and uncovering a record that spans from MIS 5 to MIS 4/3. The data from the geoarchaeological and micromorphological study of the site allow us to deduce that it was formed by alluvial contributions from the ephemeral…

    A Eixea, Clodoaldo Roldán et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 53

This paper presents the geochemical and petrographic characterization, along with the macroscopic observations, of several cherts from the central region of the Mediterranean Iberia. To determine the microfacies and microtextural features, thin-section samples were analyzed using polarizing light microscopy (PLM) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDX). The Sant Genís Formation is located in the NE of the Iberian Peninsula (Catalonia, Spain) and is dated to the Priabonian (upper Eocene), being part of the evaporitic formations of the margin of the Ebro Basin. It is formed by a succession of sandy lutites, occasional limestone layers, marls, and local stratified gypsum and cherts, including the Sant Martí de Tous chert. The Sant Martí de Tous chert type is confirmed by its abundance at specific l…

    Open Access•Villaverde, Alfred Sanchis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 11•References: 38

New excavations carried out at Cova de les Malladetes confirm and improve previous information on the archaeological sequence of this site. A total of 29 new dates allow to specify the chronology of the Aurignacian (levels XIVA–XII) and Gravettian (levels XI–VII). Furthermore, concerning the results obtained during the 1970 excavation, three new levels were identified: level XIVB, which represents a short temporal human occupation hiatus, and lev…

  • Variability of limestone knapping methods in Middle Palaeolithic levels M and Ob of Abric Romaní (Barcelona, Spain)

    Open Access•A Eixea, Amèlia Bargalló et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 43

This paper presents the limestone reduction sequences documented in levels M and Ob at Abric Romaní from a technological point of view. At level M, a recurrent knapping system has been identified, resulting in the frequency of pseudo-Levallois blanks. At archaeolevel Ob, the presence of Levallois methods are observed in association with this knapping system. In both cases, retouched tools are rare and dominated by notches and denticulates. Althou…

We approach Upper Paleolithic lithic materials from Cova Negra belonging to 30’s, 50’s, 80’s and 2013-2016 field seasons. This article focuses on the characterization of blanks, cores, and tools with a preliminary chronology, specially, from retouched materials. The main interest is the Upper Paleolithic occupation and the evaluation of postdepositional processes documented in the cavity and how they impacted to Middle Paleolithic classic levels …

Although procurement predominantly concerned the immediate vicinity of sites, our results show the presence of the same types in assemblages separated by distances of up to 120 km. Besides highlighting the significant flexibility that characterized Neandertal behavior, such an application is of singular interest because goodquality flint-lacking fissures and impurities and presenting a compact and homogen…
