Reducing Inequality in Student Outcomes in U.S. Geography Education: The Importance of Understanding Student Attitudes
This study examines relationships between geography achievement and the psychological characteristics of geography learners in eighth grade. Using data provided by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the researchers developed a statistical model of geography achievement comprising student and teacher/school-level predictor variables. The model included five predictor variables based on composite measures of student affective d…
Factors That Affect Student Outcomes in U.S. Geography Education
The ideal of U.S. public education as "a great equalizer" remains unrealized across large swaths of the country. Young people in schools are at varying levels of educational advantage and disadvantage owing to wide gaps in learning opportunities and disparate access to high-quality curriculum. Unequal educational achievement has also been linked to inequities affecting some students before they enter school due to socioeconomic circumstances, pre…
Student- and School-Level Predictors of Geography Achievement in the United States, 1994–2018
This paper examines national gaps and trends in geography achievement in eighth grade from 1994 to 2018. Statistical models comprising student- and school-level variables were developed to predict achievement using data provided by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Although there were statistically significant relationships between achievement and school-level attributes such as geographic region and school sector, the magni…
Older Adults’ Internet Use for Health Information: Digital Divide by Race/Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status
Building upon literature suggesting low Internet use among racial/ethnic minorities and socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, this study examined how race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) influence the Internet use for health information, addressing both independent and interactive effects. Using data from 17,704 older adults in the California Health Interview Survey, logistic regression models were estimated with race/ethnicity (Whites…
A Matter of Perspective: An Exploratory Study of a Theory of Mind Autism Intervention for Adolescents
Theory of Mind (ToM) is the capacity to make attributions of mental states such as thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of others. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are often characterized by delayed or impaired Theory of Mind development and poor social skills. A positive correlation between Theory of Mind skills and social skills exists, but effective interventions that generalize these skills have proven to be a challenge in the field. Furt…
Why Fans Act That Way: Using Individual Personality to Predict Birging and Corfing Behaviors
The purpose of the study was to examine whether personality traits predict one’s likelihood of basking in reflected glory (BIRGing) and cutting off reflected failure (CORFing) and to what extent team identification would mediate those effects. A path analysis was conducted to empirically test relationships between personality, team identity, and BIRGing/CORFing behaviors using the Honesty-Humility emotionality extraversion agreeableness conscient…
The cognitive consequences of envy: Attention, memory, and self-regulatory depletion
In a series of 4 experiments, we provide evidence that--in addition to having an affective component--envy may also have important consequences for cognitive processing. Our first experiment (N = 69) demonstrated that individuals primed with envy better attended to and more accurately recalled information about fictitious peers than did a control group. Studies 2 (N = 187) and 3 (N = 65) conceptually replicated these results, demonstrating that e…
Cultural Orientation as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Chinese American Adolescents’ Discrimination Experiences and Delinquent Behaviors
