Expressway urbanism: Highway planning and the reimagining of Tel Aviv-Jaffa
The Ayalon route is an infrastructural corridor serving as the principal northern and southern entrance to the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, bundling together multi-lane expressway, railway tracks, and a flood regulation canal. Its planning history, changing from a meandering seasonal river to Israel busiest traffic route, was a lengthy and incremental process, generating several plans by different planning agencies with different ambitions. Since the …
Landscapes of calculation: The design agency of methods of assessment at the Ayalon project
Assessment techniques such as cost-benefit analysis are used to evaluate and approve public sector projects and decide among different design alternatives. Therefore, they have a considerable influence on the materiality, performance and reception of infrastructural landscapes. This paper analyses the dynamic interaction of assessment techniques with other forces and modes of knowledge that produce the built environment using the historic case st…
Technology transfer of urban highways and interchange design in the 1960s: The case of the Ayalon Crosstown Expressway, Israel
This paper reconstructs the design history of the Ayalon Crosstown Expressway in Tel Aviv, a project that initiated the technology transfer of American and European transport planning methods to Israel. It examines the unstable, evolving dynamics between agents pushing the technology such as the World Bank and international traffic planning firms, and local institutions pulling or opposing it such as the city, the highway company, and various com…
Programming Emotional Care: The Nuffield Study of the Children’s Hospital, 1963
The essay examines the integration of psychological expertise into the planning of the post-war children’s hospital in England. Its main objects of analysis are the Platt Report (1959), which conceptualized the child’s emotional needs and fears as distinct from those of adults, and the Nuffield Foundation’s study Children in Hospital (1963), one of the earliest attempts to develop a scientific methodology for integrating subjective experience int…
The blue garden: Coastal infrastructure as ecologically enhanced wave-scapes
Hard coastal infrastructure such as breakwaters and seawalls are built according to engineering parameters of structural performance and cost efficiency. Especially in urban settings, they conflict with the diverse needs and values of other users and stakeholders, such as sustaining coastal ecosystem biodiversity and providing the public with open, accessible spaces for socialisation and recreation. The presented research explores how the discipl…
