Literary Criticism as Political Practice: Responsibility, Engagement, Solidarity
Whether literary studies should align itself with politics -be they postcolonial, queer, ecological, or anti-racist -has become one of the central tensions within the humanities. In an era marked by resurgent nationalism, authoritarian populism, historical revisionism, and attacks on academic freedom, the realms of academia and culture have become increasingly contested arenas of ideological struggle.Appeals to scholarly neutrality in this context…

Introduction: Herta Müller and the Currents of European History
Ten years on from the award of the Nobel Prize in Literature and thirty years after German reunification and the fall of the Ceauşescu regime in Romania is a fitting moment to revisit Herta Müller's work and place it within broader intellectual, geographical, and historical horizons than has hitherto been attempted. It is also time to reconcile
Herta Müller's Reshaping of German Cultural Memory
Seeking to explore the contemporary relevance of Herta Müller's work in the context of national and transnational memory cultures, this article examines the constitution of individual and collective memory and the ethical implications it carries for envisioning a more just future. My interest lies in exploring the challenge that Müller's approach to the labour of memory poses to conceptions of cultural memory and, related to it, to notions of nat…
Sisters in Arms: Militant Feminisms in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1968
Katharina Karcher’s study shows that despite the historical and political shifts since the 1960s, the fervent debates that took place in that decade on militancy and the use of violence in pursuit of political goals still hold relevance today. Yet, the impact and afterlife of feminist militancy remains under-explored in most histories of West German feminism. Karcher’s study takes an important step toward filling this void. While framing feminist…
Cultural Topographies of the New Berlin
Since Unification and the end of the Cold War, Berlin has witnessed a series of uncommonly intense social, political, and cultural transformations. While positioning itself as a creative center populated by young and cosmopolitan global citizens, the “New Berlin” is at the same time a rich site of historical memory, defined inescapably by its past even as it articulates German and European hopes for the future. Cultural Topographies of the New Be…

To spray or not to spray? Understanding participation in an indoor residual spray campaign in Arequipa, Peru
Current low participation rates in vector control programmes in Arequipa, Peru complicate the control of Chagas disease. Using focus groups (n = 17 participants) and semi-structured interviews (n = 71) conducted in March and May 2013, respectively, we examined barriers to and motivators of household participation in an indoor residual spray (IRS) campaign that had taken place one year prior in Arequipa. The most common reported barriers to partic…
Experiences with insecticide-treated curtains: A qualitative study in Iquitos, Peru
ITCs have substantial potential for long term dengue vector control because they are liked by users, both for their perceived effectiveness and for aesthetic reasons, and because they require little proactive behavioral effort on the part of the users. Our results highlight the importance of gathering process (as opposed to outcome) data during vector control studies, without which researchers would not have become aware that the ITCs had lost ef…

Introduction: Narrating the New Berlin: Site, Sound, Image, Word
Cities have long challenged, captivated, and inspired the cultural imagination of their inhabitants and non-inhabitants alike. In contemporary society, urban areas seem to gain importance in every imaginable way and are recognized as privi- leged sites that engender, enable, and nourish creative endeavours, multicultural environments, economic mobility, and innovative responses to the challenges posed by capitalism and globalization. However, the…

Ulrike Meinhof and the Red Army Faction: Performing Terrorism
Leith Passmore’s contribution to the burgeoning field of studies on terrorism focuses on the construction of meaning through violence and the enactment of terrorism as a method of communication. In line with the developments in terrorism studies of the past decade, it examines the violent activities of the Red Army Faction (RAF) as a communicative engagement between terrorists, the media, the public and the state, conceptualizing terrorism as a p…

Strategies of Identity Construction in Nietzsche's Critique of Wagner
Rife with gossip, anecdotes, and disputes, the relationship between the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and the composer Richard Wagner represents a fascinating chapter in the history of ideas, arousing curiosity because their intellectual affinities and disputes exemplify one of the most interesting struggles on the battlefield of aesthetic modernity while, simultaneously, titillating a more immediate human interest in the drama of friendship an…

Nietzsche, Heidegger, and the Transition to Postmodernity
Smith argues that, while much of postmodern thought is rooted in Nietzsche and Heidegger, it has ironically attempted, whether unwittingly or by design, to deflect their philosophy back onto a modern path. Other alternative paths emanating from both Nietzschean and Heideggerian thought that might more powerfully speak to postmodern culture have been ignored. Nietzsche and Heidegger, Smith suggests, have made possible a far more revolutionary crit…
