  • Flint Procurement and Exploitation Strategies in the Late Lower Paleolithic Levant

    Christophe Delage•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern Mediterranean…•2023•References: 1

Qesem Cave (QC) is a well-known Late Lower Paleolithic site in the southern Levant. It is well-known because it provides unique and spectacular behavioral evidence for this early period in human evolution. But it should also be recognized that the innovative behaviors of the cave dwellers have been thoroughly documented as part of an ambitious research project conducted by A. Gopher and R. Barkai of Tel Aviv University (TAU) since 2001. The proje…

    M C Langley, Christophe Delage•CHAPTER•Grotte du Placard at 150•2018

The cave of Le Placard (Charente) has been explored by numerous generations of scholars over the past 150 years. These various explorations have exhumed a vast quantity of archeological material disseminated in public museums and private collections. Some have been the subject of detailed examination and published, but many are yet to be fully inventoried, let along thoroughly studied. This chapter provides an inventory and analysis of two such u…

  • On the Attribution of Palaeolithic Artworks

    Open Access•Simone Chisena, Christophe Delage•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 2

In this paper, we have explored the possibility of assigning the humanthemed engravings from La Marche to their authors, according to the method outlined by J.M. Apellaniz in the 1980s. The method employed here follows the first of the three stages postulated by Apellaniz: macroscopic observation, microscopic analysis and experimental protocol. From our study emerged a pattern of five groups and sixteen hands at work in this site. We believe, the…

Archeological research at the site of Les Fadets in the town of Lussac-les-Châteaux (Department of Vienne, France) has a 150-year history; however, comprehensive descriptions of the results of its various excavations are mostly unknown. Here we present previously unrecognized human dental remains discovered among the curated faunal remains in the context of the history of research at Les Fadets, with a focus on the Upper Paleolithic occupations o…

  • Once upon a time…the (hi)story of the concept of the chaîne opératoire in French prehistory

    Christophe Delage•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2017

The concept of the chaîne opératoire was popularized in the English-speaking world for the first time in the Archaeological Review from Cambridge in 1990. At that time, the history of the integration of this concept into French prehistory had begun. It would take a few years for this process to be successfully completed and more years for the history of research in lithic technology to take this into account. However, the concept and its history …

  • To what end a paper on the history of the concept of the chaîne opératoire ? A response to Audouze et al

    Christophe Delage•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Following my original paper on the history of the concept of the chaîne opératoire, Audouze and some colleagues responded by accusing me of being biased and defamatory in my exposé. In my response here I offer further evidence in support of my argument and, most importantly, suggest that the concept of the chaîne opératoire (1) is not the creation of a single man – André Leroi-Gourhan – but should be considered as the product of a time and a stat…

Prehistoric studies in lithic raw materials have experienced some methodological innovations that have resulted in research breakthroughs. The transfer of methods from Geology to Archaeology has led to the development of a new discipline, Petroarcheology, which has allowed to go beyond the study of chert as a raw material, providing archaeological responses from Petrography’s own methods. Why did we choose the Charente’s basin samples? The history …
