  • The Musical Traditions of Northern Ireland and its Diaspora: Community and Conflict. By David Cooper

    David A Wilson•ARTICLE•Music and Letters•2011

A few years ago, at the end of an Irish Studies conference at Maynooth, there was an informal music session in one of the halls of residence, with an exuberance of jigs, reels, hornpipes, dances, and songs, helped along with liberal quantities of whisky. At the end of a set of tunes, one of the participants—a traditional singer from Derry, or Londonderry—turned to me with a quizzical expression on his face. ‘I hope you don’t mind me asking’, he s…

  • Irish Nationalism in Canada

    David A Wilson•BOOK•Irish Nationalism in Canada•2009•Cited by: 4

According to conventional historical wisdom, Irish nationalism in Canada was a marginal phenomenon - overshadowed by the more powerful movement in the United States and eclipsed in Canada by the Orange Order. The nine contributors in this book argue otherwise - and in doing so make a major and original contribution to our understanding of the Irish experience in Canada and the place of Irish-Canadian nationalism within an international context. • United Irishmen, United States: Immigrant Radicals in the Early Republic

    David A Wilson•BOOK•United Irishmen, United States•1998•Cited by: 11

Among the thousands of political refugees who flooded into the United States during the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, none had a greater impact on the early republic than the United Irishmen. They were, according to one Federalist, "the most God-provoking Democrats on this side of Hell." "Every United Irishman," insisted another, "ought to be hunted from the country, as much as a wolf or a tyger." David A. Wilson's lively book i…

  • Ireland, a Bicycle, and a Tin Whistle

    David A Wilson•BOOK•Ireland, a Bicycle, and a Tin…•1995

As he travels through the North, Wilson gets beneath the political surface to portray both the tragedy and comedy of everyday life in the Protestant and Catholic communities. Aware of the polarized image that each side has of the other, he emphasizes the importance of finding common ground and of asserting the middle against the extremes. Just as traditional Irish music is characterized by ornamentations and elaborations on a melodic theme, Irela…

In order to ensure, among other things, the safety and property of their citizens, the Western powers forced China to accept a series of unequal treaty settlements. The first series of treaties, signed between 1842 and 1844, abolished the Chinese government's right to regulate trade, saddled it with indemnities, deprived it of territory, opened five port…

  • Thailand: A New Leader

The death of Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, announced on December 9, 1963, was unquestionably the most significant political event of the year in Thailand. Since he had been in fragile health for many years his death was not a surprise. Nevertheless, as the keystone of the revolutionary regime that has ruled the country since 1958, the effect of his passing from the scene will inevitably have consequences of importance. however difficult they may …
