Durchleüchtigister, Großmechtiger Khönig
In August 1620, the remaining Protestant opposition in the Lower Austrian estates sent an urgent appeal for help to King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. This article presents and analyses the author’s transcription of this letter of supplication and places it in its historical context. The analy sis shows that the interactions between Central European Protestants and Stockholm significantly pre-dated Sweden’s entry into the Thirty Years’ War, which a…

R obert K night . Slavs in Post-Nazi Austria
Next to the Bohemian lands with their often-examined tensions between Czech and German nationalists, the Alpine crown lands of Styria, Carinthia, and Carniola formed a second nucleus of German-Slavic strife in the late Habsburg Monarchy. The disintegration of the monarchy at the end of World War I left substantial minorities on both sides of the new Austro-Yugoslav border. Whereas much of this border was drawn directly by the victorious powers, t…
In Whose Camp Were the Austrians? Historical Tradition and the Austro-Swedish Interrelationship of the Early 1600s
This article examines Austrian Protestants who actively resisted the Habsburg Counterreformation in the early seventeenth century. Since the climax of their activism coincided with the Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years’ War, the analysis includes contemporary Swedish policy and the resulting Austro- Swedish relationship. The essay not only explores the historical conflict itself, however, but also uses it as a case study on societal recoll…
Fall of the Peacemakers
This article examines the prelude to the Thirty Years’ War in Austria. It places the country’s estate system in an international context and evaluates the implications of the religious schism for the relationship between monarchs and nobles. Thwarted in their efforts to enforce confessional orthodoxy in the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburgs were determined to retain control of their patrimonial lands. The analysis reveals the careful strategy of C…
Peasants and Swedes
The analysis of confessional conflict in early modern Austria has often focused on nobles and townspeople. To get the full picture, however, it is essential to integrate the rural core into the analysis. In the Habsburg domains, the dynasty’s resolve to uphold or subsequently re-establish the old faith antagonized large sectors of the populace. This occurred in the early phase of the Reformation, when a broad diversity of reformist thought influe…

Conservative Revolutionary
Early modern Europe experienced an expansion of both governmental institutions and the responsibilities they assumed. These changes were accompanied by protracted conflict. This article traces the philosophy of state developed by Austria's estatist opposition during the early decades of the seventeenth century. In the writings of Georg Erasmus von Tschernembl, especially, an alternative vision of state and governance took shape, whose implementat…

The discourse of historical legitimization
This article analyzes the discourse of historical legitimacy in the duchy of Schleswig and in the Slovenian-speaking regions of Carniola, Styria, and especially Carinthia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The question as to who had arrived in the area first was never far from the surface, because in an era of national romanticism, duration of stay seemed to allot special claims to possession. Rather than challenging this rationale, all s…

A Tale of Three Communities
This paper explores national identity in Sleswig by examining three cultural communities. It describes the changing public appearance of these communities at different points in time, but it also reveals diverse layers of affiliation within them. By focusing on the prewar Danish community in Prussian North Sleswig, the interwar German community in Denmark, and the postwar Danish community in Germany, the essay examines the national dichotomy in d…

Fluid Identities in Central European Borderlands
This article examines transitional identities in pre-1945 Central European borderlands on both an individual and a collective level. These territories traditionally contained a zone of ethnic contact and passage. Numerous nerve lines linked different cultural groups, and ethnicity often became a matter of personal choice. The renewed strength of ethnicity and nationalism in Eastern Europe during the late twentieth century has rekindled interpreta…
National History—National Imagery
By all accounts, the Austrians of the late twentieth century live in a stable Western European country with a secure sense of self. The concept of Austrian nationhood finds solid support in the country's population, which consistently displays stronger signs of national pride than its German neighbors. When the Austrian republic was reestablished from the ruins of the Third Reich in 1945, however, historical tradition did not inherently favor the…
How to measure identity
In the post‐war decades, Austrian national identity underwent a marked transformation. Increasingly, the wider German sense of self that traditionally predominated among German‐speaking Austrians lost ground to an exclusively Austrian one. This article analyzes quantifiable expressions of public identity to explore the extent of the changes in the Austrian sense of self. It does not develop a comprehensive picture of Austrian nation‐formation, bu…
