  • Stocks and shocks: Assessing the relative roles of public and private inventories in buffering rice price volatility in the Philippines

    Open Access•Bernhard Dalheimer, Kenneth Foster et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2026•References: 42

Public stockholding of food is politically contentious and economically challenging. Although private stocks are generally understood to be more efficient than public stocks at providing a reliable buffer against production shortfalls, private stocks often fail to stabilize prices during extreme food market shocks. Moreover, maintaining large public stock programs in which the government acts as the buyer or seller of last resort, can be very cos…

  • Impact evaluations in data-scarce environments: The case of stress-tolerant rice varieties in Bangladesh

Open Access•Jeffrey D Michler, Dewan Abdullah Al Rafi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•References: 4

  • India’s export restrictions and response of African and Asian retail rice prices

  • Joint decision-making, technology adoption and food security: Evidence from rice varieties in eastern India

    Open Access•Maria Luz L Malabayabas, Ashok K Mishra et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2023•References: 1

This study investigates the effect of married couples' joint decision-making on rice variety selection on rice productivity-a measure of food security. The study uses the 2016 Rice Monitoring Survey and the endogenous switching regression (ESR) method. Results show that rice farms with joint decision-makers (husband and wife) would have higher yields, particularly in households that adopted MRVGen1 (before 1986) rice varieties. Thus, families wit…

  • Drivers of household and agricultural adaptation to climate change in Vietnam

Colm Duffy, Valerien Pede et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2021

Vietnam accounts for 6% of global rice production and is exceptionally vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This study utilises a mixed model ordinal logistic regression on farm household data collected in the Mekong and Red River deltas with the goal of quantifying their impacts on 'planned', in anticipation of gradual climate change, and 'response', to deal with the impacts of sudden onset change, adaptations. The study highlights incre…

  • A contribution to the empirics of food price behavior: The case of rice price dynamics in Italy

Open Access•Gustavo Barboza, Laura Gavinelli et al.•ARTICLE•British Food Journal•2020

Purpose The purpose is to detect the nonlinearity wholesale rice price formation process in Italy in the 1995–2017 period. Design/methodology/approach A nonlinear smooth transition autoregressive (STAR)-type dynamics model is used. Findings Wholesale rice prices are significantly affected by variations in the international price of rice as well as variations in Arborio price. Research limitations/implications The limitations include policy recomm…

  • The inequality-growth link revisited with spatial considerations: The case of provinces in the Philippines

Valerien O Pede, Gustavo Barboza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2018•References: 5

This study revisits the relationship between income inequality and economic growth using provincial-level data from the Philippines over a ten-year period (1991–2000). This study demonstrates that the magnitude and significance of the inequality-growth relationship is not stable across space and the magnitude can be overestimated when spatial considerations are excluded from analysis. Generally, existing literature on the relationship between inc…

  • Is farmer-to-farmer extension effective? The impact of training on technology adoption and rice farming productivity in Tanzania

    Open Access•Yuko Nakano, Takuji W Tsusaka et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2018•Cited by: 33•References: 5

  • Receiving information about rice seeds on mobile phones in eastern India

Valerien Pede, Valerien O Pede et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2018•References: 25

This article examines how farmers use mobile phones to obtain information about rice varieties in eastern India and investigates if this contributes to rice varietal replacement. The findings show that farmers located farther away from the market were more likely to pay for the calls. Moreover, about 26% of the farmers who had to pay to receive calls purchased seeds of at least one rice variety that they had never planted before, while less than …

    Todd Kuethe, Todd H Kuethe et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2010•Cited by: 15•References: 1

Kuethe T. H. and Pede V. O. Regional housing price cycles: a spatio-temporal analysis using US state-level data, Regional Studies. A study is presented of the effects of macroeconomic shocks on housing prices in the Western United States using quarterly state-level data from 1988:1 to 2007:4. The study contributes to the existing literature by explicitly incorporating locational spillovers through a spatial econometric adaptation of vector autore…
