  • Sources and modes of terrigenous sediment input to the Chilean continental slope

    Open Access•Jan-Berend W Stuut, Sabine Kasten et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007

  • Diatoms as upwelling and river discharge indicators along the Portuguese margin

    Open Access•I Gil, I M Gil et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•References: 1

High-resolution diatom and phytolith quantitative and assemblage analyses have been conducted on two box-cores from the Tagus pro-delta (SW Portuguese Margin) in order to compare these common palaeoceanographic proxies to instrumental data describing the upwelling regime and the freshwater input of the Tagus River. The western Portuguese margin is affected by seasonal coastal upwelling controlled by northerly winds and by strong freshwater input …

  • Paleoproductivity evolution off central Chile from the Last Glacial Maximum to the Early Holocene

    Open Access•Oscar E Romero, Jung-Hyn Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

A geochemical and paleontological reconstruction of paleoproductivity, upwelling intensity and sea surface temperature (SST) off central Chile at 35°S (GeoB3359-3) reveals marked changes from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) through the Early Holocene. Surface-water productivity was determined by the interaction between the atmospheric (the Southern Westerlies) and oceanographic (the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, ACC) systems from the LGM through …

  • The late quaternary paleoenvironment of Chile as seen from marine archives

    Open Access•Jan-Berend W Stuut, Margarita Marchant et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2006

Many variables have been used to reconstruct Chilean paleoenvironmental changes during the late Quaternary. In this paper we present an overview of a number of these variables, so-called proxies, that have been inferred from marine sediments from the Chilean continental margin and summarise the results. In general, a glacial-interglacial pattern of climate changes can be recognised in the proxy records with high-frequency variabilities superposed…

  • Late Holocene coastal hydrographic and climate changes in the eastern North Sea

    Open Access•Dierk Hebbeln, Karen-Luise Knudsen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 6

We present a high-resolution palaeoenvironmental reconstruction covering the late Holocene from the Skagerrak and other sites in the North Sea area. The data, which are based on the analyses of marine sediment cores, reveal a marked environmental shift that took place between AD 700 and AD 1100, with the most pronounced changes occurring at AD 900. Both surface and bottom waters in the Skagerrak were subject to major circulation and productivity …

  • An 800-year reconstruction of Elbe River discharge and German Bight sea-surface salinity

    Open Access•Carolyn Scheurle, Dierk Hebbeln et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 2

On the basis of stable oxygen isotopes (8180), the summer sea-surface salinity of the German Bight, southeastern North Sea, was determined for the past 800 years. In this near-coastal area, salinity is mainly dependent on the freshwater input of the Elbe River discharging its large catchment, which covers an area of 149 000 km 2 of central Europe. Therefore, a proxy for Elbe River discharge was reconstructed at the same time, and consequently the…

  • High-Resolution Marine Record of Climatic Change in Mid-latitude Chile during the Last 28,000 Years Based on Terrigenous Sediment Parameters

Open Access•Frank Lamy, Dierk Hebbeln et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1999

Marine sediment cores from the continental slope off mid-latitude Chile (33°S) were studied with regard to grain-size distributions and clay mineral composition. The data provide a 28,000-yr 14 C accelerator mass spectrometry-dated record of variations in the terrigenous sediment supply reflecting modifications of weathering conditions and sediment source areas in the continental hinterland. These variations can be interpreted in terms of the pal…

  • The Growth and Decay of the Late Weichselian Ice Sheet in Western Svalbard and Adjacent Areas Based on Provenance Studies of Marine Sediments

    Open Access•Anders Elverhøi, Espen S Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

The history of the Late Weichselian northwestern Barents Shelf, including western Svalbard, has been investigated by provenance/sedimentologist studies of five cores from the continental shelf and slope west of Svalbard. The chronostratigraphy of the cores is based on AMS 14C dates and oxygen isotope analyses. Interpretations of the cores suggest that the ice sheets of western Svalbard and northwestern Barents Sea experienced advances and retreat…
