The following list of dates contains all measurements made during 1973, ie , since our last list (R, 1973, v 15, p 451–468). We have installed this year a Nuclear Enterprises NIM system to be used with our 2.5L Oeschger-type proportional counter (Philips), in addition to our 6L and 1L proportional counters which have worked consistently with Beckman Lowbeta electronics. The Philips counter has been calibrated relative to the Beckman electronics a…

The following list comprises results obtained during 1971 from both the 1 L and 6 L proportional gas counters at pressures of 1 to 3 atm of methane. Age calculations are based on 95% activity of NBS oxalic acid standard and computed from the Libby half-life of 5570 ± 30 yr. Background samples are synthesized from Welsh anthracite. Errors quoted refer only to the standard deviation (1 σ ) calculated from a statistical analysis of sample, backgroun…

The following list of dates contains all measurements made during 1972, i.e. , since our last list. Counting equipment, operating procedures and sample pretreatment are the same as previously described (R., 1969, v. 11, p. 263). Age calculations are based on 95% activity of the NBS oxalic acid standard computed from the Libby half-life of 5570 ± 30 yr. Background samples are synthesized from Welsh anthracite. Errors quoted refer only to the stand…

Errors quoted refer only to the standard deviation calculated from a statistical analysis of sample and background count rates and the Libby half-life of 5570 ± 30 yr. Pretreatment has been continued as described previously (R., 1969, v. 11, p. 263). In cases where sample size was insufficient for full pr…

Measurements have continued with the 6 L counter. A counter of similar design but with 1 L volume has recently been brought into operation. Despite replacement of the teflon parts, the 1.5 L Oeschger-type counter has not worked consistently and has not been used for dating. Results are not corrected for δ C 13 . Errors quoted refer only to the standard deviation calculated from a statistical analysis of count rates and the Libby half-life of 5570…

Measurements have continued with the 6 L counter which has proved reliable at pressures as high as 2.6 atm and as low as 0.3 atm. It has now been enclosed in a double ring of 27 geiger tubes which has reduced the background count to 10 cpm at 2 atm. So far, we have had no success with the 1.5 L Oeschger-type proportional counter. Failure to obtain steady readings is probably due to continued outgassing from the teflon insulation. All insulating p…

A radiocarbon laboratory has been set up to assist with the Pleistocene research undertaken in the Geology Department at Birmingham and has been designed for the measurement of ages of geological material up to at least 50,000 yr old. Construction began in May, 1965 and routine dating commenced in October, 1966. This is carried out using a CH 4 proportional counter

    Open Access•F W Shotton•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1959•Cited by: 4

Unavoidable delay in preparing a comprehensive report on the nature and distribution of stone implements in the West Midlands has coincided with rapid progress in the examination of axes in some of the more northern counties. As a result, certain new petrological groups which it has been convenient to establish in the West Midland survey, are becoming increasingly relevant to the other areas under investigation, though no published definition of …

The Council for British Archaeology put as one of its objectives the examination of stone axes by petrological methods, with a view to their more exact identification and their placing into groups of common origin. Of the various regional sub-committees set in being only the South-west Museums Group, which initiated this type of research, has published any results of its findings, its final report being published in this volume of the Proceedings…
