  • Multi-isotopic insights into diet, mobility, and status in the Picene necropolis of Novilara, Italy (8th-7th centuries BCE)

Open Access•Z Laffranchi, Michael A Beck De Lotto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026

The Early Iron Age in Italy was associated with the formation of pre-Roman cultural identities and increasingly differentiated social structures. Yet, the extent to which these transformations were reflected in diet, mobility, and embodied life experiences remains poorly understood. This study applies an explicitly multiproxy framework to investigate social differentiation at Novilara (central Italy, 8th–7th centuries BCE), one of the largest nec…

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the presence of digestive macroparasites (helminths) in human remains from the Late Iron Age (3rd-1st c. BCE) in northern Italy (Verona province). MATERIALS: Pelvic soil samples and control samples from the skull or foot areas of 55 individuals from the necropolises of Seminario Vescovile (n = 45) and Povegliano Veronese (n = 10). METHODS: All samples were examined using brightfield optical microscopy. In addition, soil sample…

The Islamic cemetery of La Torrecilla was uncovered in 1968 when Antonio Arribas Palau and his team from the Department of Prehistory Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Granada were conducting documentation work on the dolmen necropolis located in this area. Following, the discovery of these first burial sites, several archaeological interventions were undertaken, culminating in four campaigns that concluded in 1976. In this p…

  • "Celts" up the Alps. Patterns of territorial mobility and funerary variability in Switzerland during the Late Iron Age

Open Access•Z Laffranchi, Vanessa Haussener et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2025•Referencias: 13

The European Late Iron Age (ca. 5th-1st centuries BCE) is characterized by significant economic, social, and cultural transformations, including the development and intensification of cultural and economic networks. These features make the last centuries BCE relevant for the study of human territorial mobility and its demographic and social correlates. In this study, we investigate the frequency and nature of human mobility during the Late Iron A…

The introduction of sugarcane in Europe by the Arabs in the 10th century AD brought about a drastic change in gastronomy and oral health. In Southern Spain (Al‐Andalus), sugarcane was mainly consumed by the elite, although its consumption became relatively widespread during the Nasrid Kingdom. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of the introduction of sugar on human diet and oral health by comparing patterns of caries in deciduous tee…

  • Sex differences in diet and life conditions in a rural Medieval Islamic population from Spain (La Torrecilla, Granada)

    Open Access•A Jiménez‐brobeil, Drosia Charisi et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2021•Referencias: 156

OBJECTIVES: Gender differentiation can influence the diet, physical activity, and health of human populations. Multifaceted approaches are therefore necessary when exploring the biological consequences of gender-related social norms in the past. Here, we explore the links between diet, physiological stress, physical activity, and gender differentiation in the Medieval Islamic population of La Torrecilla (Granada, Spain, 13th-15th century AD), by …

  • Social differentiation and well-being in the Italian Iron Age

The possible association between "biological" and "social" status in the past is a central topic in bioarchaeological studies. For the Italian Iron Age, previous research comparing skeletal and funerary variables depicts a multifaceted scenario consistent with nuanced biocultural patterns. This calls for additional studies on a broader series of archaeological contexts and skeletal assemblages. Here, we contribute new data about the biological co…

OBJECTIVES: The presence of a gendered subdivision of labor has been bioarchaeologically investigated in various prehistoric and historical contexts. Little is known, however, about the type of differences in daily activities characterizing men and women among the Celtic communities of Italy. The focus of the present study is the analysis of differences in patterns of entheseal changes (ECs) and long bone shape and robusticity between sexes among…

  • Funerary reuse of a Roman amphitheatre

The economic and political disruption following the collapse of the Roman Empire is an important moment for the cultural and biological history of Western Europe. One of the trends associated this socioeconomic change is the reuse of Roman public monuments for different purposes including funerary ones. The cultural meaning of this practice, occasionally described throughout Europe, is however still unclear. Here, we present a study of a group of…

One of the most interesting sites of the Bronze Age in the central area of the Iberian Peninsula is La Motilla del Azuer (Daimiel, Ciudad Real), dated between 2200 and 1350bc. The main objective of this study was to investigate interpersonal violence in this site and to report an uncommon case of violent death. No traumatic injury was detected in any child, and men and women significantly differed in the frequency of traumas. More traumatisms wer…

We present a paleopathological analysis of an adult male from the Bronze Age site of Motilla del Azuer (Daimiel, Ciudad Real) from the Spanish region of La Mancha. The hyoid bone from this individual exhibits a healed fracture. This is an exceptional archaeological find. This injury is extremely rare apart from hanging and strangulation, and it is even rarer since the individual survived this injury to his neck. This injury was probably produced …
